Sunderland manager believes losing van Persie is as big a miss for Arsenal as losing Messi for Barcelona. by AH
Sunderland manger Martin O’Neill has spoken about Arsenal after his Sunderland side drew 0-0 with the North Londoners at the weekend.
O’Neill said;
“It’s a major loss to them, anyone would suffer if they lost a world-class player like that. Real Madrid would if they lost Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona would if they lost Messi – he was every bit as important to Arsenal.
“It’s a major, major loss for them. He was the fans’ favourite here. Before I came up to Sunderland, I went to a game at the Emirates and not only was he brilliant but the crowd were right behind him.
“You think you’ve got ¬everything, you’re playing for Arsenal and then you decide that is it. What more can a manager do? You’ve got an unhappy player here for a year and he plays under duress or do you decide to take the money?”
I understand his point but to compare Van Persie to Messi and Ronaldo isn’t right, especially as the latter two have been performing consistently throughout their club careers unlike Robin who maybe had 2 good seasons out of 8 for Arsenal. Van Persie will be missed by the club and no doubt there will be times in the season, where we think we should of kept him in his last year, however we must understand that, we would have kept an unhappy player, who wouldn’t give it their all and then probably still gone on to join United next summer anyway. So it’s best we should sell him and £24 million is great – as long as we re-invest it.
The Dutchman decided to join rivals Manchester United last week and he is set to make his debut tonight against Everton. Let’s see if he gets as many chances to score playing for our arch enemies…….
