The Roma defender Phillipe Mexes has refused to sign a new contract at the Italian giants and will be available on a free transfer this summer. The Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was strongly linked with Mexes last summer as the Gunners were desperate for another top class centre-back at the Emirates, while Chelsea have had many defensive problems this season as the current defenders at Stamford Bridge succumb to age and injury.
The highly experienced French international will be in demand all over Europe in June, but Chelsea and Arsenal are likely to be able to offer the 28 year-old a great last pay-day before the 28 year-old retires, while Mexes himself is believed to want to test himself in the Premiership as a great end to a great career.
Mexes himself made it clear that he will wait to see what is being offered in June before deciding where he will be playing next season. “I have many offers, but I will not decide my future until the season ends,” he said.
“Right now, I could go to any of the major leagues in the world, but I have to evaluate many things when I make my decision.”
Most Arsenal fans would say that Arsene Wenger still needs one more top centre-back to improve the Gunners back line, and the Frenchman Mexes would fit in a treat with the rest of the defence at the Emirates.
