Wenger – Arsenal can’t compete for the title right now

Arsenal’s defeat at Old Trafford has left them nine points behind the new League leaders, and Arsene Wenger admits that they now have a mountain to climb if they are to compete with Man United, Chelsea and Man City in the race for the Premiership title.

He couldn’t give any excuse for Arsenal’s poor showing on Saturday and simply said that they came up against a much better team. “We were poor today defensively I think,”

“There’s no obvious reason for that apart from the fact that we didn’t start well and that Man United have quality up front. They score goals against everybody and were better than us. It’s as simple as that.

“I think today we were not good. At Man City, we played a 1-1. We had a good result and didn’t suffer from the comparison. Today, I just think at the moment we are not on full cylinders and we looked much more vulnerable defensively than we were at the start of the season.

“We have to show that the team can compete for the title. At the moment, you cannot say that because we are far away. But that’s what the target is until the end of the season.

“We’ve played many away games now in many difficult places. We’ve played at Manchester City, at Manchester United, at Liverpool and at Stoke. So we have many difficult away games. But we are very far behind now.”

November’s games now become crucial and we now have a demanding visit to Schalke, before facing Fulham, Tottenham and Montpellier at home. Let’s hope the team can pick themselves up quickly because another couple of defeats could see Arsenal even drop out of the race for fourth place, never mind the Champions League…..

Gourcuff to Arsenal getting closer!

Arsene Wenger has never been a massive fan of the January transfer window, but the increasingly desperate situation at Arsenal, combined with over £35 million burning a hole in his pocket means that he will probably splash out in the new year, and one of those looks like it will be Yoann Gourcuff.

Arsenal have been linked with the French international midfielder before, and reportedly failed in a bid to sign him from his current club, Lyon, last year. He does have three years left to run on his contract with the Ligue 1 side, but they are now prepared to sell him, according to Metro.

Lyon are in need of money, and Gourcuff is one of their star names, and he has not had the effect at the club that was hoped for. He is a player who can be used as a deep lying striker, playmaker or central midfielder, and his style has been compared to that of Zinedine Zidane. The 26-year old has got 29 caps for his country and has scored four international goals.

After Wenger said that he had no offensive midfield options to replace Wilshere with on Saturday, he could be making a move for Gourcuff pretty soon. Diaby started the season well but his injury problems soon returned, and we cannot rely on him.

It is not just creating chances, but finishing them that we need. Arsenal fans will be praying for another striker to be bought in January, or we could miss out on the Champions league for the first time in years.

Arsenal fail to sell any deadwood players (including Squillaci)

There will not be many Arsenal fans that will be happy that a certain Sebastien Squillaci is still in training with the club after the transfer window deadline has come and gone. Arsenal failed to find buyers for Nicklas Bendtner or Chu-Young Park, but at least they have been sent out on loan to Juventus and Celta Vigo respectively.

You could say that Carlos Vela was at least offloaded to Real Sociedad six weeks ago, but most Arsenal fans would say he was a misunderstood talent rather than deadwood, but the likes of Marouane Chamakh (Giroud’s backup striker?), Andrei Arshavin and Johan Djourou are still part of the Gunners squad, while Bendtner, Denilson and Park are still Arsenal players in name if not in geographical position.

Many Arsenal fans are obviously disappointed that Arsenal didn’t bring any more classy players to strengthen the team, but they probably would have been at least a little happier knowing that the above-named players were at least taken off our payroll.

Does Wenger really believe that Chamakh, Djourou and Arshavin can still be assets to the squad this season?

Ferdinand – Man Utd should have massacred Arsenal

The Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has told the press that his team were terribly disappointed that they didn’t beat Arsenal by a very wide margin on Saturday after being totally in control of the game from start to finish.

He said: “We should have finished that game off ages ago. That’s the most disappointing thing, If you had been in our changing room you’d have thought we lost the game, the way the mood was. At the end of the day it is three points. I thought it was the best shape we have had for a while, this season, and we defended as a team. That showed in the amount of chances we created but we should have maybe had the game won by five, six or seven but it wasn’t to be.”

Sir Alex Ferguson felt exactly the same and thought that United should have used the opportunity to boost their goal difference with some glaring misses and even the missed penalty by Wayne Rooney (Thank God RVP didn’t take it!). Fergie said: “We lost on goal difference last season and I don’t want that to happen again, we should have scored five or six or maybe even more than that. I’m disappointed by our inability to hammer home the advantage. You look at that scoreline and think it was a close game but it wasn’t.”

“It looked as though it was going to be self-destruction. It only takes a second to lose a goal. They had some possession without threatening us but thank God we got the second one because with them scoring right on time, it would have been an embarrassment.”

What does this say about Arsenal? That Fergie would consider a draw against Arsenal as an embarrasment? Since when did we become pushovers to a team that used to fear playing the Gunners every year……..

More problems for Arsenal as Walcott is sick

Can things get any worse for Arsenal? I suppose Mertesacker could bang his head getting off the plane, or Cazorla could fall down an open manhole. Arsene Wenger will be sweating on the state of Theo Walcott tonight, and hoping that he can play at least some part in tomorrow’s crucial Champions League game against Schalke.

“He has been sick overnight and in practice today, and we will have to see how he is tomorrow morning.”

Get well, Theo, we need you. If Theo is not well enough to start tomorrow, then Wenger may be forced into a change of formation because his makeshift right player, Aaron Ramsey, has not even travelled to Germany due to a groin strain. We do have three strikers in the squad, Chamakh, Podolski and Giroud.

Maybe it is time to go 4-4-2, and try to stay more compact. If we lose to Schalke tomorrow and Olympiakos beat Montpellier in Greece, we will be level on points with the Greeks and still have to travel to Greece. We will certainly have lost top spot and be struggling to qualify.

Arsenal could do with a win, but we cannot afford to lose. Wenger needs to make sure the players work hard and make it difficult for Schalke. If Theo is not 100 percent, he could always come on late and exploit some tired legs.

Arsenal legend worried about Walcott and the Gunners

Tony Adams spent his whole football career at Arsenal, and never4 dreamed of not signing a contract with the club, but he knows times have changed and fears that the Gunners have messed up by leaving it so long to persuade Theo Walcott to extend his deal.

Adams feels that the poor form that Arsenal are in this season will only make it less likely that Walcott will decide to stay at the Emirates. This would not have been an issue if the club had got him to sign a new contract after getting third place in the Premier league last season, and guaranteeing Champions league football.

“The big one at the moment is Theo, but what incentive has he got?

“I don’t think it helps that he got a hat-trick in the week and then he’s on the bench at the weekend.

“I’d like to see him up front, but I’d also like to see van Persie, Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas still at the club.

“You can go back to the days of Ashley Cole going to Chelsea, so many have moved on and are doing jobs for great teams.

“You don’t let them go into the last year of their contracts. Chelsea didn’t do that with John Terry or Frank Lampard. When you have strong players, you put them on long contracts and look after them.”

Adams was captain of Arsenal for 14 years and only David O’Leary played more games for us. He won four league titles and three FA cups with the Gunners and it hurts him to see us struggling now.

Wenger has finally admitted that Theo can play as a central striker, but he may have left it too late. If Arsenal do not turn their form around soon, we could be seeing another star player joining one of our rivals.

Arsenal boss confused by Santos and van Persie shirt scandal

Andre Santos seems intent on driving the Arsenal fans up the wall. If his defensive lapses were not bad enough, he seemed overjoyed at half time on Saturday. Arsenal had just put in a terrible 45 minutes, but the Brazilian left back seemed happy and relaxed as he chatted with van Persie and strolled down the tunnel with the Dutchman’s shirt over his shoulder.

Wenger was stunned, apparently, when Santos blithely strolled into the dressing room, and has made him understand how unacceptable this was. It is not just the fact that he did this, but to have so little respect for the Arsenal fans to do it in full view is unbelievable.

I am sure that I am not the only Gooner who would be happy to never see Santos in an Arsenal shirt again. Please get well soon Gibbs, we need you badly. Even if Gibbs is not fit for tomorrow’s Champions league game in Germany, Wenger is planning to drop Santos, according to the Mirror.

Santos needs to understand what a gross misjudgement he made, and how much it will have angered the fans who were so impressive in getting behind the players. I was willing to believe that his poor form was due to lack of play, but he has got no better. Maybe he just does not care, he certainly didn’t seem to on Saturday

Arteta and Wenger want to repay Arsenal fans at Schalke

Arsene Wenger has praised the Arsenal fans for their unflinching support recently, but knows that he owes them some better results. We nger and his vice-captain Mikel Arteta aim to start repaying the Gooners tomorrow against Schalke.

Arteta is demanding an improvement from the Arsenal team, knowing that the Champions league game in Germany will not be easy, but Arsenal have the ability to win. Anything less that 100 percent effort will not be acceptable, as Arsenal try to get the season back on track.

“We’ve got another massive game again. We lost against (Schalke) at home, which was a big disappointment, and it’s going to be a really tough game in Germany.

“We have to bounce back. I think we have to show how much we want to win it, and go there and show big attitude.

“I have no doubt about the attitude we have in the dressing room, and the desire. I think the attitude was good (against Man United). We all kept trying, even with 10 men.”

I think that Arteta is going a bit easy on some of the Arsenal players, and hope that behind closed doors there are some harsh words being given out. You cannot fault Arteta’s commitment, but there have been too many players recently not doing enough.

Arsenal have a great chance to boost confidence and qualify top of the group if they can beat Schalke tomorrow. The Germans lost at the weekend to a Hoffenheim team who had not won in four games, but they will be giving everything to beat Arsenal.

If it is true that Kieran Gibbs could play tomorrow, that would give us a massive boost and will cheer the fans up before a ball is kicked. Happy Santos is a liability and proved on Saturday that his attitude is all wrong.

Podolski has not been his usual self recently, and it could well be because he is worried about Santos behind him. Gibbs will give the team more confidence and solidity, allowing us to focus more on going forwards.

Is it the end of the line at Arsenal for Arshavin?

Arsene Wenger has taken some of the blame for the red card shown to Jack Wilshere as Arsenal lost to Manchester United on Saturday. Reports pointed to the fact that Alex Ferguson substituted Tom Cleverley who was in a similar position to Wilshere, basically one foul away from being sent off.

Wenger has said that Evra made a meal of the tackle, and the reason why he had not removed Wilshere from the field was a lack of options.

“But we were in a position where we had to attack, and I had no offensive central midfielders on the bench.”

Correct me if I am wrong, but central attacking midfield is the position that our little Russian Andrey Arshavin sees as his best, and is where he wants to play. Wenger even admitted that Arshavin is better when he plays narrower.

So did Wenger just forget about Arshavin? He did bring him on later, for Podolski, on the wing. It does not make any sense. I know Podolski was not having a great game, but he did not replace him until the last five minutes.

Does Wenger think that Arshavin is not good enough in the middle, or is he just covering himself for not replacing Jack? To be fair, Wilshere was our best option of getting back into the match at the time, so it was a risky decision. It can’t be very nice for Arshavin, though, to hear your manager say that he had no options in your favoured position when you are sitting on the bench hoping for a game. Does this mean that the Russian will soon be on his way out of the Emirates?

The Ox will get new Arsenal deal and wants 100 England Caps!

Just over a year after buying Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton, senior figures at Arsenal are ready to give the 19-year old England international a new and improved contract as a reward for his fantastic, form and improvement since coming to the Emirates. The Ox works as hard as his namesake and has got a brilliant attitude.

Due to the exceptional players in the Arsenal midfield this season and the formations used by Arsene Wenger, Ox has not played as much as he might have expected for the Gunners, but he was looking a little tired after a long season and summer.

His refeshing approach, combined with his pace and power have made him an instant favourite with the England fans and there is a good chance that Roy Hodgson will unleash him against San Marino in a couple of days. That will put the youngster on eight caps which will leave him just 92 to go to reach his target of 100.

The midfielder is not being arrogant but he is confident and is never one to shirk a challenge. He does not think about wages when he is asked about his future.

“Get as many caps as I can for England, score as many goals as I can for England and win as many things as I can with England and Arsenal.

“I guess I should say 100 as then I would be more than satisfied.

“The buzz of a massive tournament was an experience I will never forget and one I hope will happen every two years.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain has already scored one spectacular goal for the Gunners this season, hopefully there are many more of them and some silverware to come.

Arsenal will never sell on loan Park Chu-Young

Arsenal have released their accounts which are looking pretty good, showing that Arsene Wenger should have a decent war chest to spend in January. Another interesting thing apparent from the figures is the news that the club have given up any hope of ever selling the South Korean international striker, Park Chu-Young.

Park signed for Arsenal last summer just before the transfer window closed, and this is one panic buy that did not go well. The young (get it) Korean was half way through his medical for Lille when he heard about interest from the Gunners and cut short his tests. He may now wish he had gone through with it after making one single solitary league appearance as a substitute for eight minutes in his Arsenal career.

Now on long term loan at Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo, Park has been written off financially by Arsenal. The accounts include an “impairment fee” which means that they are writing off the value of a player. Denilson and Bendtner are also on loan but the impending end of their contracts point at Park being the player.

By writing the amount off now, Arsenal can show better accounts for the next three years and this will help in the Financial Fair play system, allowing the club to spend more in the future. With TV money about to increase and the Emirates debt coming down quickly, Arsenal look like being one of the best off clubs when FFP does come in to play, unless Man City and Chelsea are allowed to circumvent the rules.

Park has already played three times in the league for Celta Vigo and has scored his first goal, but I cannot see him ever coming back to Arsenal and getting game time, especially if Wenger is allowed to splash some cash on a striker.

Arsenal are already looking at a replacement for Walcott

Behind the scenes at Arsenal must be a place where a less than firm handshake could spell disaster. If Theo Walcott thought that he was involved in the sort of bargaining where you name a price double what you want and walk away offended when you know all along that you will accept much less. then he is in for a shock.

After Peter Hill-Wood went public today stating that Arsenal have a wage structure and will not alter it for anybody, reports claiming that Arsenal are sizing up possible replacements for the winger/striker. Crystal Palace youngster Wilfried Zaha is being tracked by Arsenal, and other Premier league teams, and could be seen as a direct replacement for Walcott.

Pat Rice is no longer assistant manager at Arsenal but he still has a role at the club, and he was present at Selhurst Park on Saturday and cannot fail to have been impressed by the 19-year old winger who scored twice against Burnley.

Zaha is the kind of raw talent that Walcott was when he became a Gunner and would be just the sort of player that Wenger could build and improve. This story may be part of Arsenal’s plan to put pressure on Theo to accept his new contract offer, but I would not like to call Arsenal’s bluff.

The Arsenal chairman has said that they want to keep Walcott, but not at all costs. Nothing has yet been decided one way or the other, but the clock is ticking.

“For the moment his people are still talking to us and we hope it will be resolved, but don’t ask me when because I haven’t a clue.”

Wilshere, Sagna and Frimpong ready to go for Arsenal

When Arsenal return to the bread and butter work of the Premier league in 11 days time, the team could have a new look to it after Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Frimpong completed decent shifts with no complications last night for the under-21 team.

Wilshere played for about an hour against West Brom last week and was understandably cautious. The 20-year old took another big step last night, being much more involved and influential and obviously enjoying himself. He was replaced by Nico Yennaris with 15 minutes to go but had been showing signs that he could be ready for some first team action.

Frimpong was excellent and could definitely play in the league, if Arsene Wenger can find room for him in our star studded midfield. Sagna will probably need another reserve outing but he did manage an hour and has got more time during the international break to get stronger.

Sagna has praised the efforts of his stand in Carl Jenkinson. Everybody connected with the club has been surprised and delighted by how well the young right back has coped with his new responsibility, including Sagna.

“He brings a lot to the team and I am very happy for him because he is a hard worker, a very good guy and is going to be one of the best.”

If Abou Diaby and Kieran Gibbs are back from injury, as expected, by October 20th then Wenger will have a real selection headache. Only Tomas Rosicky will be missing from the squad and that is almost unheard of for the Gunners.

Poor Norwich will not be looking forward to the game, that is for sure.

Cazorla wins Arsenal Player of the Month ahead of Jenkinson

What would Arsenal have done without Santi Cazorla? The defence have been a lot better, including the role of Mikel Arteta, and the two new strikers are settling in well. All of the midfielders have played well but without Cazorla I think we would have struggled.

The Spaniard’s efforts have been rewarded with the EA Player of the Month award, making it two in a row. His performances have provided the platform for Podolski, Giroud, Gervinho and Walcott to get the goals we so desperately need. He is not frightened of a shot himself and he is a defender’s nightmare as he roams all over the pitch.

Cazorla’s stats show that his passing accuracy in West Ham’s half was 84 percent, he also had six shots at goal and scored. A little less reported is his willingness to track back and tackle, and his effectiveness when doing so.

Against the physical West Ham, the 5ft 6in Spaniard made five tackles, and won them all. He also won 8 from his 12 ground duels, according to eplindex.com.

Providing protection for the back four and Arteta and linking play with the wide players and forwards whilst running the game from the middle, no wonder Theo Walcott called him “the conductor.”

Arsenal’s most improved player Carl Jenkinson was not too far behind Cazorla in the vote, getting 21.4 percent to the Spaniard’s 29.4. It shows just how well he has played this season and how much Gooners appreciate this. Gervinho was third with 15.5 percent.

Arsenal want extra game to get Wilshere and Sagna ready for the Premier league

After playing their first competitive football for Arsenal in 14 and 6 months respectively, Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna needed an international break like Steve Bould needs a hairdryer. The next scheduled under 21 match is not until the night of Monday 22nd October which would mean a two week break for the players.

Emmanuel Frimpong is also on the verge of being ready for the first team so Arsenal are trying to arrange another game before the 22nd. All three players will be twiddling their thumbs, desperate to get on to a football pitch. They have done plenty of gym work and training but it is match fitness and sharpness that they need.

The coach of the reserve team, Terry Burton, realises how important playing time is for them and has been impressed enough with their progress to try to speed up their comebacks.

“We’ll probably try to rearrange a game of some sort next week to keep them going. Obviously I’ll speak to the boss about that, but we’ll try and fix them another game.”

Wilshere has made a marked improvement in just two games and another outing could spell his readiness for the step back into the first team against Norwich City in 10 days.

Sagna may be a little longer but has revealed that he is raring to go mentally after struggling to stay positive earlier in the year.

“When you have such a big injury once you take it, but twice is hard.

“It is amazing to be back, I have been waiting for this moment for five months.

“I am in a good way today.”

Who should Arsenal buy with their £40 million warchest? (Part 1)

Wenger has the money, who do you think he should buy?

After yesterday’s AST meeting, it was confirmed that Wenger has something along the lines of £40 million at his disposal come January. This was pretty much common news previously but I thought it would make an interesting article to postulate who Wenger could actually get for that money and for what positions (it’s also going to be a very slow news day for the next couple of weeks!).

Firstly, it’s imperative we get a new striker in this January. We are threadbare in that position at the moment and without Giroud, we will have to resort to players like Gervinho (whom is going through a purple patch but will eventually fade). We need a player that will challenge Giroud for his position. We won’t win a title with one striker, you need at least 2 top class players in that position, may be even 3.

My suggestions would be:

Llorente – A proven European striker with only a year left on his contract. He’s already been frozen out of Bilbao’s setup and the fans are livid with him (possibly the same situation as RVP for them), however he could show respect and join us ( a team with no rivalry at all with Bilbao). He’s similar to Giroud but that shouldn’t really matter. RVP is similar to Rooney, Aguero is similar to Tevez etc. It doesn’t stop managers buying them – that’s because they are world class players. So is Llorente. He’d only cost £10 million in my opinion come January. Bilbao won’t be in any position to negotiate.

Soldado – Another Spaniard who’s had a meteoric rise in La Liga. He’s become a big player for Valencia and is most similar to Higuain. He’s a finisher; a lethal one at that. He could cost something along the lines of £15 million which is easily affordable to the club.

In the second part, I’ll discuss what other parts of the team we could potentially bulk up come January.

Arsenal starlet extends loan

The Arsenal starlet Chuks Aneke was sent off for a months loan at Crewe Alexander but it all went wrong after just 73 minutes of his debut against Stevenage when Aneke made a mad two-footed challenge on Stevenage’s Anthony Grant which resulted in straight red card and an automatic three-match ban.

This meant that he could only play in one more game during his loan period, but now Arsenal have sensibly extended his visit to give him more chances of gaining first-team experience at Gresty Road.

Aneke was more than happy to learn of the extra month agreed between the two clubs. “I am delighted the club have extended my loan I really want to stay as long as I can as long as I am playing and I’m happy to play for Crewe.”

Aneke, despite being just 19 years-of-age, has been at Arsenal for 11 years already, and made his senior team debut last year in the Carling Cup and scored six goals in just 10 games for the reserves. He also scored last year in League One while on loan at Preston and if he continues to progress he could well be the next young star to emerge from the Arsenal Academy…..

Podolski – Arsenal fans might yet call me rubbish!

The new Arsenal winger Lukas Podolski has been extremely impressive in the opening games of this season as the Gunners have remained unbeaten in all competitions, but the German international has declared that it is far too early for him to be declared a star for the Gunners after just a few games into his first season.

Podolski, 27, said: “You come to a new club and a new league and you never know how it will start or how the team plays.

“The style of football is the kind I like. One or two touches. Quick passing. Fast at the front.

“But I have only played six matches. It is too early to say ‘Podolski is a hero. He’s the best player and Arsenal are great’. I don’t like this.

“After 20 matches and we have lost six matches everyone will be saying ‘Arsenal is rubbish’ and ‘Podolski is rubbish’. We must wait.

“We are good now. We have nine points. But I signed for four years — not five or six matches.

“The English league is the best in the world. You have the best teams, good football to play, good fans, new stadiums.

“The stadiums are always full. It’s not like in Italy. You have Champions League matches out there and there are 20,000 people.

“I spoke with Per Mertesacker about Arsenal but it was my own decision and I had to be happy with this. I had only come to England once, playing with Bayern Munich at Fulham.”

The 27 year-old also seems pleased that he was received at the Emirates as just another player and without great fanfare. He said: “When I arrived at Arsenal for the first time, it was like a normal day.

“Wenger wasn’t waiting with flowers for me. It was not like ‘Podolski, you are here!’”

He certainly seems to have his very talented feet planted firmly on the ground, which is probably why he has settled in so fast, and he also says that Arsenal’s seven-year trophy drought didn’t put him off in the slightest. “It’s not important only to win the trophies. You have a lot of people win a World Cup and now they have nothing. They do nothing. People don’t speak about them.

“We will fight for the Premier League but it was not important for me when I signed. I wasn’t saying ‘Oh, they’ve won nothing for seven years. I don’t go there’. I like this club. I like the people.”

And “the people” like you too Lukas! And simply because of his humility and common sense I firmly believe he will become a hero for Arsenal fans….

Pressure Off Arsenal striker Giroud – Now he will keep scoring

The French international striker Olivier Giroud seems like a different man since registering his first goal since moving to Arsenal in the summer. Confidence is flowing through Giroud and he is feeling confident about his and the whole team’s season.

“It’s done, I have my first goal, but it has to be the start of a beautiful adventure.

“I want to play week in, week out, find my rhythm and keep scoring. I am convinced that with some perseverance it will come.”

Giroud admitted that his first goal was preying on his mind, no matter how hard he tried not to think about it. His friends and family kept talking about it and Arsene Wenger noticed that he was under pressure and started resting him. Wenger will be as relieved as Giroud as he can now use the strength and hold up play of the Frenchman without worrying about his confidence.

Giroud could be crucial against the robust defending of Chelsea. Despite his four match ban, John Terry will play against Arsenal before deciding whether to appeal. Wenger can combine speed and trickiness with strength and aerial ability and give Chelsea a barrage of problems to deal with.

“Coventry was the perfect win before Chelsea, a very important game. It brings alot of confidence for me, but also for the team.

“Now we need to think about the league. It’s a massive game and I hope it will come our way.”

Let’s all hope that this is the beginning of the “beautiful adventure” for Giroud and Arsenal fans…..
