Another striker leaving Arsenal

Posted on July 13, 2012 by admin

19-year old Benik Afobe is not a forward that Arsene Wenger wants to get rid of like Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela or Marouane Chamakh. Wenger and the player himself know that he is not yet ready to step up to the Arsenal first team. That is why Arsenal are going to let him join a club in the Championship this season.

Birmingham City are the favourites to sign the striker on loan, as their manager Lee Clark has already signed him once when he was the manager of Huddersfield. During his time at the club he appeared in 32 games and scored 8 goals. He was also named as Man of the Match four times in a row.

Afobe has had a great career at youth level, being Arsenal’s under-18 player of the year in 2010. He has represented England at under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels, scoring 21 goals in his 34 games.

Arsenal had to see off interest from Barcelona when they offered the youngster a professional contract and he was on his way to setting the Premier league alight until he suffered a knee injury last summer. After missing most of the season, Afobe went to Reading and made three appearances for them.

Wenger wants the player to get back on track this season and playing competitive football for Birmingham will hopefully do the trick. We could do with another striker soon.
