Arsenal target told he can leave Barcelona

Posted on July 18, 2012 by admin

Barcelona and their new manager Tito Vilanova have resumed pre-season training this week, although many of the squad are still on extended breaks after Euro 2012. Ibrahim Affelay did not have to join the squad until July 23rd but the Dutchman has gone back early to discuss his future.

Affelay had an excellent start to his Barcelona career, making 29 appearances in all competitions despite only joining the Spanish club in January. Injury ruined what was supposed to be another productive season last time. Now he has been told by the new manager that he is not likely to feature in the team this season and should seriously consider accepting a transfer.

The versatile 26-year old has already rejected a move to French club Lille. Juventus and Inter Milan are thought to be interested, but Affelay would prefer to join Arsenal. Barcelona are blessed with an abundance of attacking midfielders but need to strengthen the defensive side after Seydou Keita moved to China.

Surprisingly, Barcelona are working to a very tight budget and may need to sell Affelay to finance any transfers they need. Arsene Wenger could do some very good business here but he will need to be quick. Anytime Arsenal are known to be interested in a player, the vultures start circling. Don’t be surprised if you hear about Man City putting a bid in next week.
