According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Sneijder has told his club Inter Milan that they should move quickly and fight off interest from other suitors to try and sign Barcelona player Ibrahim Affelay. Reports over the summer have seen Afellay linked with a move away from Camp Nou, with Arsenal being named as the favourites to land the Dutchman, whilst Italian giants Inter Milan are also linked with the player.
Afellay recently rejected an offer from French club Lille. He stated that the reason was that he was undecided over his future with Barcelona. However, after talks with new Barcalona coach Tito Vilanova, Afellay has been informed that he will receive limited playing time and that he may not be featured in all of the match day squads. It’s also been reported that Barcalona have officially put Affelay on the transfer market and that he is available for £4.5 million.
The Dutch midfielder missed the majority of Barcelona’s season last year due to injury but returned to feature in all three of Netherlands group games at the tournament and impressed clubs across Europe. This sparked rumours that clubs from across Europe were interested in the versatile midfielder.
Afellay must now consider his future and he will have to decide on his future soon with both Arsenal and Inter set to make offers in the coming weeks. He joined Barcelona in January 2010 from Dutch club PSV in a £3m deal. Afellay has since made 28 appearances, scoring two goals since.
Afellay has the chance to join a personal friend at both clubs, with Robin Van Persie at Arsenal and Wesley Sneijder at Inter Milan, however both of those players’ futures are also in doubt.
I would love to have Ibrahim Afellay at Arsenal as he offers flair, versatility and his ability to change a game is unbearable for opposition defences. If Van Persie was to stay the pair could really link up well in the Premier League. I would expect Affelay to be our main Centre Attacking Midfielder whilst Wilshere is still injured and then a rotation between a Winger position and an Attacking Midfielder position would be key in making sure our team was fresh and unpredictable.
