Arsene Wenger has spoken to the media before taking his Arsenal squad to the far east for the pre-season tour. A notable absentee will be the Arsenal captain Robin van Persie. This will undoubtedly set the rumour mill into overdrive, but this is what Wenger said.
“Some players have to work on their fitness so are a bit behind, like van Persie, like Koscielnt, like Giroud who came in later. They are not ready to play games.”
Make of that what you will, but the two Arsenal players who represented England at Euro 2012, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, are both going on the tour. Holland were eliminated from the competition a week before England, but France did reach the quarter final stage. Maybe Walcott and the Ox, being younger, just happen to have returned in better condition.
From the training ground photographs, van Persie does seem to have aged five years during the summer. Maybe Wenger is protecting van Persie from what could be a physically demanding tour. An injury to the Dutchman now would be a disaster, whether he is going to stay at Arsenal or not.
“For me, van Persie is one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best, and my desire is to keep him at the club.” Wenger told ArsenalPlayer. The manager knows, however, that if he is determined to leave then Arsenal need to get the best price possible to re-invest in the squad. An injured van Persie would almost definitely be leaving next summer for nothing.
