Are Arsenal being punished by the Deins?

David Dein was an integral figure in the rise to dominance of Arsenal in the last 30 years. He was vice-chairman of the Gunners between 1983 and 2007 but had to leave the club for reasons that are arguable. There is a school of thought that believes that Dein was forced out of Arsenal and that his son, Darren, is pursuing a vendetta against the club or the current board now.

Darren Dein is a qualified solicitor who works primarily as an advisor/agent to some high profile footballers. His clients include; Thierry Henry, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and ( drumroll ) Alex Song. It may be a coincidence that all of his clients who play for Arsenal decide that they want to move on, but it is noticeable.

There is a pattern emerging about how these players bring about their exits from Arsenal, letting their contracts get down to a year or less and then demanding a transfer. Maybe Darren is just advising his clients well on how to get the best deal that they can, but he is not doing Arsenal Football Club any favours.

I am not writing a character assassination piece here, and freely admit that I am not aware of all the facts in this matter. David Dein did wonders for the club and Arsene Wenger was very sad when he had to leave. He was very highly regarded by the players and the staff. The reasons for his departure are said to be the conflict of interest between his role at Arsenal and his role at the FA. There is, quite clearly, more to it than this and I would love to hear any more info or insight on the subject.

Anyway, if the rumours about Song leaving are true, he will be the last of Darren Dein’s clients at Arsenal, unless King Henry comes back for a third spell this season.
