I am getting used to Arsene Wenger’s press releases and statements this summer. It is all about reading between the lines and , essentially, not believing him. There was no way he would sell Alex Song with three years left on his contract. Arsenal had not even had any contact with Barcel-oh-no we have sold him.
This new found ability to understand Wenger-speak is what tells me that Le Prof is after a striker.
“We are looking to bring one more midfielder in, of course, and maybe one defender as well because we still feel we are short in some positions.”
So there you are, expect Arsenal to announce the signing of Fernando Llorente tomorrow. Seriously, I do think that Wenger is brilliant in the transfer market, but you can imagine the cold feeling of dread that washes over another club’s chairman when he is told that Arsene Wenger is on line one.
I would not actually be too surprised if Wenger did make another swoop for a striker before the season starts. Giroud and Podolski will settle in to the Premier league pretty quickly, but that still leaves the Gunners dangerously short of cover. I do not consider Chamakh as reliable cover. The one constant in the additions that Arsenal have made this summer is that they came cheaper than most people would value them at.
Llorente is rumoured to be available at about half of his buy out clause, so you never know.
