Szczesney-An Arsenal Gem by Taki
Thinking about our new and prospective signings only led to me thinking in circles of ifs and maybes. In general, it was highly depressing and frustrating having to guess what might happen so I decided instead to think about our current ‘old’ squad. In turn, I thought about one particular player, our Polish keeper.
I think in general, he’s often overlooked in the team. In Saturday’s match he made at least two or three really good saves. He looked confident and focused with his reactions and timing all clicking together really well. I think with all the spotlight being focused on players coming in and players having left, we need to reflect on just how good this guy really is.
His composure, agility, and command of his area led to his selection as Arsenal’s first choice at just 20 years of age. After winning his place in the first team, Szczesney expressed his desire of continuing as Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper for the rest of his career. I don’t know how true this is but I still love hearing that a player wants to end his career at Arsenal.
Wenger revealed that he and the rest of Arsenal’s coaching staff have high hopes for the Pole, saying, “We have identified Wojciech as a future great, great goalkeeper.”
Frankly, I have to agree. He has made giant strides since his debut for Arsenal and for Poland, especially over the last 18 months. Not only that but he exudes a prescence which belies his 22 years! I, for one, pay homage to our gem of a keeper and it’s a pleasure to have him as our last line of defence!
