Great news Gunners, Arsenal have got arguably their best defender back from injury. Going in to a crucial game against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, this news will give the team a welcome boost. Wojciech Szczesney may also be back from his problem. The Polish keeper will undergo a test on Friday and Saturday night to determine his availability.
I assume that Szczesney will get his starting place back if he is fit, even though Vito Mannone has looked solid. Koscielny picked up a calf problem during Arsenal’s last pre-season game against Cologne which was on August 12th. He should be fit enough to play, but will Wenger think he is sharp enough? He has had very little competitive football since last season and Arsenal cannot afford to slip up against Brendan Rodgers’ team.
If Wenger is not sure that Koscielny is ready to return, at least he has the reassurance that Mertesacker and Vermaelen have worked well together so far this season. Maybe it is the influence of Steve Bould or simply that Mertesacker has got his form back, but he looks vastly improved this time around.
With the Ox and Kos back, the team sheet is starting to look a lot healthier and, who knows, there could be a couple of new names on it by Sunday.
