Apparently there have been lots of communications going on behind the scenes between Arsenal and Spain recently. Some of it has been about the transfer of Santi Cazorla from Malaga, some about the loan deal of Nuri Sahin from Real Madrid and some about Barcelona’s interest in Alex Song.
According to the Spanish media, Barcelona and their new coach Tito Vilanova have got a number of players they are looking at to bolster their defensive midfield capabilities. Song, Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Chelsea’s David Luiz are among these, as is Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao.
Martinez was their top target and they have not quite given up on him, but they do have strict financial guidelines and cannot do a Man City or a PSG. Apparently, Barcelona are in the process of sounding out the various clubs and players in order to see who they could get and for how much. The Spanish club have put a value of just 15 million euros on Song, so I very much doubt that Arsene Wenger will be giving them any encouragement.
Madrid and Jose Mourinho are playing the waiting game with Tottenham. They have offered £30 million for Spurs’ Croatian playmaker and hope that Daniel Levy finally admits defeat in his attempt to keep the wantaway player. Until Modric becomes a Madrid player, Arsenal will have to wait for Sahin.
The Turkish international has rejected potential moves to Besiktas and Galatasaray in Turkey, along with PSG in France and even Tottenham as part of the Modric deal. It is thought that he would accept a year long deal with Wenger’s Arsenal, but only if there is no hope of breaking in to the Madrid midfield and Modric’s arrival would assure that.
So, from Barcelona, no news is good news, while we hope to hear that Madrid get Modric. Can we afford to risk not having another defensive midfielder before the season starts? Or should Wenger start to look elsewhere?
