Arsene Wenger has been dealt a double bonus by Sheikh Al-Thani and his NAS group that own Malaga FC. Firstly, their decision to pull the plug on their big spending at the Spanish club made the transfer of Santi Cazorla possible and not too expensive. Secondly, it proves Arsene Wenger right in his determination to balance the books.
Malaga are one of a number of teams who have been supported by money from investors in the Middle East. These teams, such as Paris Saint-Germain, are spending fortunes on transfers and inflated wages in order to attain success in their domestic leagues and, subsequently, in European competition.
The supporters are happy because they see top name players that they would never previously have seen playing for their club. They start to challenge for trophies and everything seems rosy. The problems arise when the super rich owners of these clubs start to lose interest in their new projects.
In a very short space of time, Malaga have gone from the high of qualifying for the Champion’s league for the first time, to having to sell their best players, such as Cazorla and Salomon Rondon who has joined Rubin Kazan. They are looking for a buyer for the club, but anyone looking to buy will not be buying success, they will be buying debt and a club in crisis.
The players who have been given long term contracts on loads of money will be difficult to sell on and they will not want to take any cut in pay. Imagine what sort of position Man City would be in if the owners stopped pumping money in. Wouldn’t that be a shame?
