Zenit renew their interest in Arshavin by TS
Andrey Arshavin has been in and out of transfer talks the entire season, with Galatasaray and Zenit St. Petersburg leading the race for his signature. Although, the £4m fee Galatasaray were prepared to offer is well under the asking price for the Russian.
Despite claiming they have no need for Arshavin, Zenit St. Petersburg have begun to negotiate the purchase of the Russian football captain from Arsenal. According to The Times newspaper, Arsenal are ready to part with their winger for a fee closer to the £10m mark. Given that the transfer season is set to close in a frenzy Zenit’s press service have neither denied nor confirmed the information opting to remain neutral for the time being.
Arshavin has already appeared on the pitch for the Gunners this season, coming on as a sub against Sunderland this past weekend. Arshavin is under contract with the Arsenal until 2013, but lacks a firm spot in the team’s starting lineup. The 31-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Zenit, scoring three goals in 10 appearances for the club. Despite, the Russian becoming unfavorable at Arsenal his agent has stated that, ‘The most important thing for Andrey is to go somewhere where he’ll be well paid.’ It seems that a move to offload him will be harder than expected with only Zenit in contention for the time being.
The winger, at one point, had widely been expected to seal a permanent return to Zenit this summer, but following an angry spat with fans following Russia’s exit from Euro 2012, the club opted to pull the plug on an £8m deal, with Arshavin now seen as a figure of controversy in his homeland. However, since then, things have cooled down and the club now seems open carry on negotiations.
