Barcelona’s ‘tapping-up’ of Arsenal’s Alex Song continues……

The art of tapping up. by KJ

Today, Gerard Pique of Barcelona has been talking about the prospect of Alex Song joining them at Barcelona and thinks it is very likely to happen. This is already turning into a repeat of Cesc Fabregas saga with 3 Barcelona players directly talking about Alex Song joining them at Barcelona. Here are all three sets of quotes:

Sergio Busquets: “Song is a very good player – young, a hard worker, with lots of physical power. Another player in my position would be welcome, but either way I will keep working hard to win a place in the starting team.”

Andres Iniesta: “”I know Song from seeing him play, and from playing against him. Technically he is a very good player and is also very strong physically too.

“If he comes it would be because he has the qualities to play here, there is little doubt about that, and we’d welcome him.”

Gerard Pique: “I have followed his career and he has become a very good player. He is physically very strong and is good with the ball at his feet. We are open to his arrival. If he comes, and from what I have read he could do, we would love to have him.”

As you can see, there is a clear motive to all the quotes and it is to praise Song. If you look carefully at all 3 quotes, it highlights in all 3 that he is “a very good player”. Isn’t it a bit suspicious that they all use the same wording? I highly doubt it. It’s clear that Barcelona has given them a set guideline/criteria to fulfil when talking about Song. It is cleverly devised to make the Cameroonian feel wanted.

What it is doing is making Song feel valued and appreciated by Barcelona players which is essentially one of the highest praises in world football. It will start eating away at him knowing that there is such a big opportunity on the horizon and in theory; it will start to make his head turn.

I hope Song realises what Arsenal and specifically Arsene has done for him. Luckily he still has 3 years on his contract so if he is to leave, it is because Arsene wants him to leave.
