Ferguson admits he is still fighting Arsenal for van Persie

United Still Chasing RVP: by SV

There has recently been a short burst of optimism surrounding RVP’s future, amid reports of a U-turn on the part of Robin van Persie, but we have been soundly brought back down to Earth again with a statement made by Alex Ferguson. Following United’s penalty defeat to Barcelona, the Scot has confirmed that he has indeed bid for RVP and is currently in negotiations with Arsenal, though he is making little progress due to the fact that we’re negotiating with other clubs too. Here’s the quote, in full, (from Sky Sports):

“We have made a bid and they (Arsenal) have been trying to negotiate with other clubs. We just have to persevere. Hopefully it will come our way. We are trying our best but there is no progress at this moment in time.

“I do not have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. We are not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal. It is difficult to say why they are operating this way. I do not know what their thoughts are because they are not giving anything away.”

The bad news that we could discern from this quote is that Arsenal are, indeed, in the process of selling our captain. It could also mean that the rumours of an RVP U-turn were untrue, or why would Arsenal be negotiating for his sale?

However, there is some good news, a silver lining, if you will. Though RVP may not have committed a full U-turn, he could still have been impressed with our new signings. As it stands, he could be far more open to the prospect of staying, even if he hasn’t told the club yet. It could be that, if he stays, he will do so happily and not grudgingly.

Also, it does seem as if we are reluctant to sell RVP to United and are looking to offload him overseas. I’m not sure where though, as it seems as if Juventus have pulled out of the race. Perhaps Milan? After all, they have plenty of cash from the Ibrahimovic and Silva sales and are looking for a new striker. This is pure speculation though.

One thing I would say – or rather, say again, as I’ve said it before – is that if RVP does stay, or appears for us against Sunderland, the fans should back him and the team 100%. Because, if he is playing on the 18th, it means he won’t have yet committed treason and will still be playing for our club.

Quite besides the fact that anyone playing with our shirt on deserves our applause, supporting RVP will make it far more likely that he will stay. And let’s not kid ourselves; we’re a stronger team with him than without him. But don’t worry; I will fully back any booing if he does eventually leave…
