Who to watch out for next season? by KJ
As I write this article, Arsenal have just touched down in Germany with the possibility of our newest signing, Santi Cazorla walking off that plane. What an exciting prospect this is. To watch our new Spaniard in action on the weekend is just breath-taking. However, nothing is confirmed yet so let’s remain grounded but one thing is certain, Cazorla is definitely an Arsenal player.
This article is more focussed on analysing the players we already have, the players I believe will have an outstanding season for the Gunners.
The first one is the controversial, Aaron Ramsey. Many Arsenal fans think his career is over in the red and white but I think that statement couldn’t be further from the truth. He is still the quality player we signed and his performances during the Olympics have proven that with a bit of rest, he will return to his best. Although he didn’t score many goals or made many assists, he dictated the tempo of the game. He slowed it down when needed and also was always making himself available for the next pass, essentially something Xavi would do. I’m not comparing the two as it would be ridiculous but it would be great to have a player in that type of mould. Make sure to keep a watch out for the Welshman, there is still a lot to come from someone still so young.
The next one is our only Ivorian, Gervinho. He was signed last summer from then Ligue 1 champions Lille. It was a great purchase on Wenger’s behalf as he was tearing up Ligue 1 with ease and added the directness that the team seemed to lack during the 2010/2011 season. He started off quite brightly in Europe with a crucial goal against Udinese in Italy. His league form was a bit iffy with a red card in his first match against Newcastle but he slowly steadied into the team and managed to get a crucial assist against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He was doing well with 4 goals and 5 assists during the first half of the season. However, his season was interrupted by the African cup of Nations where he missed a crucial penalty that would secure the cup for Ivory Coast. His confidence took a massive knock and since then, he only managed one assist (against Aston Villa). It’s clear that Gervinho is a confidence player and needs to know that he is appreciated by both the manager and the fans. I personally think he is. We all love the fact that he has a massive work rate and is constantly doing the defensive dirty work when both Gibbs and Santos maraud forwards. We also enjoy his unpredictability which allows him to constantly take on defenders like Oxlade – Chamberlain does.
The final player that will surprise us next season is Coquelin. This is a bit of surprise to many as he doesn’t seem to be in Wenger’s immediate plans but I’d disagree with that sentiment. Not only is at the prime age to start muscling his way into the starting 11 but he’s also very hungry for game time and will do whatever he can to get this at Arsenal. He is a class player who exibits a great temperament for someone so young. At only 21, he is the same age as M’Vila and you can see reasoning behind Wenger going cold on Yann.
We are looking very solid at the moment with our 3 new signings but we can still expect some surprises with the current squad!
