Wage War by TS
Over the past weeks, I’ve noticed that a lot of arsenal supporters don’t fully understand why we have lost key players over the years. Some say its because Arsenal haven’t won anything-to some extent that’s true- but most would agree that money was the main influencing factor. So I’ve written this article to try shed some light on why exactly our big stars opt for money over loyalty.
The problem is relatively simple but the solution seems impossible-at least to the board. Take Robin Van Persie, who received a reported £70,000 per week and compare that amount earned by fringe players such as Chamakh who were not far behind earning weekly wages of between £50k-£60k per week. Gazidis, our chief executive the said, “Our wage structure has been based around a flatter salary structure – that is part of a team ethos the manager develops, it’s about interaction between players – not superstars.” Which basically means all players, regardless of playing time or importance to the team are paid within arms reach of one another.
It is important to stress that there is no wage cap or wage structure at Arsenal. Just a long held belief by Arsene Wenger that there should be some kind of equilibrium among players who share the same dressing room. Which in turn meant, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, van Persie etc did not reach six figures. The truth is that for a team that is supposedly stingy on wages, our wage bill is high at £130m per year. So what does this mean? Simple. Arsenal don’t get value for their money.
Fringe players are the most happy because they are given parity and therefore get high weekly wages . Take Bendtner who has never denied the story that he chose shirt number 52 as it represents his weekly wage. If he were at any other club he wouldn’t even be earning half as much. They earn so much that offloading them is a problem, like Chamakh. No club is prepared to match the wages they earn at Arsenal so they sit and run out their contracts. Take the likes of Man U’s wage policy. Rooney who earned 200k per week last season compared to Welbecks 15k per week. That’s a huge difference.
Having said that, Arsenal have reshaped their policy to the extent where new signings and young talents will be paid wages that are more realistic to their abilities. The money saved is then theoretically open to AW to use to reward the keep Arsenal’s new stars. Obviously this makes more sense as new talent is hungry to prove their worth, big stars are kept happy with high wages and the fringe players don’t just sit back and contribute nothing because their big salaries and great contracts will based on performance.
