Koln v Arsenal Second Half Analysis by KJ
The second half of the match against Koln saw a mass change of personell by Wenger with two of the new signings taking to the bench.
This was the new Arsenal line-up
Szczesny
Jenkinson… Djourou… Koscielny… Santos
Song… Diaby
Arshavin
Gervinho… Podolski… Gnabry
It was definitely an interesting line up with two surprises. Arshavin playing in the hole and Gnabry actually getting a run out.
Gnabry looked decent but seemed a bit overwhelmed by the situation. After all, he’s only 17 and already playing in Germany for a preseason in the first team.
Podolski was also looking pretty effective as a sole striker as well with him being even more involved with the team from that position. He was really working for the team and probably trying to put in a good performance for his fans in Cologne.
Eventually, Wenger made his final two substitutions with Van Persie coming on and also Chamakh. The departing two were Gnabry and Podolski. What was interesting was that RVP came out with the captain’s armband which definitely makes things interesting. All it points to for me is that RVP is more likely to stay now. It could also help our bargaining position with any parties who are interested. If we show that we’re serious about keeping him, we will always get a better price.
The game started to die down a bit with no real efforts to get a goal. It was more a training exercise for the team. However, Gervinho managed to get the ball on the half way line and used his raw pace to out-run Cologne’s right back who was left for dead. He managed to get into the box near the by-line where he attempted a cheeky curling shot to the goalkeeper’s near post which he pulled off. It was a fantastic goal and the best of the night. The sheer audacity of the move really excited me. Gervinho was clearly looking more confident and was willing to take the shot on, something which he’s been criticised (rightfully) for not doing. I’m telling you now, he will be a big part of the next season. He is just superior to any player that Arsenal have at the moment when taking a player on. He effortlessly dribbles past defenders.
The game fizzled out and eventually, it finished at 4-0 to the Gunners (I got my prediction right!). It was a great game that was full of interesting twists and turns. RVP also threw his shirt and armband into the Arsenal crowd after the game finished. This could definitely be taken both ways, is he saying goodbye or trying to make amends? We’ll have to see.
