Wenger admits there’s a void to fill at Arsenal

Posted on August 16, 2012 by admin

Arsene Wenger has been remarkably candid about his feelings on selling Robin van Persie to Premier league rivals Manchester United. He stops short of blaming the board, but does admit that financial rather than professional reasons drove the sale.

“The economic part of it is the only satisfaction, but money doesn’t go out on the field and play, players do.”

“To strengthen an enemy is the other negative point of this loss. We wanted to avoid it but we couldn’t.”

You can imagine him saying this through gritted teeth, as Fergie’s big red face is beaming. Wenger is obviously disappointed in van Persie as he goes on to mention the eight years he spent at the club, and how hard it is to keep a player who is so determined to leave.

“It’s another bitter pill to swallow.”

Arsene tries to be a little upbeat and reminds us that Arsenal have been through similar, and worse situations. I think he is sending a message to the board, however, by stating that Podolski and Giroud will have a hard time filling the boots of van Persie straight away.

“There’s a void to fill.”

Or, in other words, get your money out Stan. Wenger pointedly mentions the fact that van Persie’s departure will provide much more opportunity for Olivier Giroud, so I think we can expect to see him start in the middle of the attack alot this season, if not against Sunderland. How will we line up on Saturday I wonder?
