“Europe at the moment is like the Titanic, but we live in football like nothing matters.”
Arsene Wenger once again stated his case for the defence of Arsenal Football Club and their self sustaining policy. He knows that Arsenal are in a privileged position due to massive earnings, but is concerned about the ridiculous amounts of money that Chelsea, Manchester City and teams across Europe like Paris Saint-Germain are spending.
“A club can buy players like PSG has done or Manchester City or Chelsea, with unlimited resources, but overall football suffers.”
“We are not mega rich because we don’t have unlimited resources.”
A major problem with clubs who have rich financial backers is that the money is only loaned to the club. Then if, for some reason, the owner no longer foregoes the debt, the club is faced with meltdown. With the deepening global financial crisis, there is a good chance of this happening more often.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if football is not touched by it at some stage. If you look at debt in football across Europe, it is quite massive and we have to be responsible.”
Wenger also blames the big spenders for many club’s problems with players as they have inflated players’ wages to ridiculous levels.
“But, of course, our players quite rightly compare themselves to the players of the other clubs.”
To finish off, Wenger had a dig at Chelsea, suggesting that Roman Abramovich was getting bored of his pet project until they managed a lucky victory in the Champion’s league, despite poor performances in the league.
“Maybe it will wake up the appetite of Abramovich again…It shows how competitive the Premier league is because Chelsea finished fifth in the Premier league and that is the real quality of a team.”
You tell ‘em Arsene.
If anyone doubts what he is saying, take a look at the Malaga situation. Sheikh Al-Thani bought the club two years ago, pumped money in and has lost interest. Now they have massive payments they cannot cover and they are not even paying the players. Having qualified for the Champion’s league, they are in danger of being disqualified.
