I know the theory that you should not change a winning team unless you have to, but in the modern game there are much more games than there used to be and a certain amount of rotation is normal and necessary. Arsenal travel to the Etihad stadium on Sunday still unbeaten this season and with a great team spirit, but there are signs of fatigue creeping in to some of the players’ performances and I wonder if it would be better to rest them against Manchester City.
The most obvious candidate is Abou Diaby. Even though he had not played at the weekend, the French midfield maestro was flagging badly in the second half against Montpellier and could have cost us the win. He dallied on the ball in dangerous areas and could have given away a penalty. He is a victim of his own success, because he is such an awesome player that coaches are reluctant to drop him or take him off. Steve Bould should have replaced him early on in the second half and the same thing happened when he played for France. Didier Deschamps knew that he had taken a knock but kept him on for the whole game.
Diaby needs to regain his core strength and match fitness after such a long time out of the game or we risk losing him to injury again and then it will be too late to decide whether to play him or not. Cazorla and Arteta showed signs of fatigue as well but we cannot afford to drop them all, so I would rest Diaby on Sunday then think about resting one of the others the following week. What would you do?
