Arséne Wenger – 16 years in charge by AH
Today Arséne Wenger celebrates 16 years in charge of Arsenal, officially joining the club back on 28th September 1996, he started work the next day (TODAY!). Wenger has enjoyed a mass of trophies at Arsenal. Arsene Wenger has revolutionized Arsenal in more ways than one, not only on the pitch but off it as well- Let’s look at a few of his achievements;
- Wenger changed Arsenal’s approach and philosophy from “boring, defensive football” to “free-flowing, attacking football.” Making Arsenal not just more attractive and enjoyable to watch but this style also added excitement to the league overall.
- He won the League and FA Cup in his first full season (1997-1998)
- Wenger completed the double again in 2001-2002.
- Arsene Wenger is the only manager in Premier League history to lead a team unbeaten through a whole season as Arsenal won the league in 2003-2004. He also beat Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest by going 49 league games unbeaten.
- He also won the FA Cup on two other occasions in 2003 and 2005 while winning the Community Shield 4 times.
- Kept Arsenal in the top two until 2005, and Arsenal have never finished below the top four positions under Wenger.
- Wenger led Arsenal to Champions League football for 15 consecutive seasons (a record still running) as Arsenal have reached the last 16 of the competition for 12 years of those years, including one desperately unlucky final against Barcelona.
- Which also made Arsenal the first London club to make the Champions League final.
- His achievements have been recognised being awarded with “World Coach of the Decade: 2001-2010? as well as being inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
- “Arsène’s a miracle worker. He’s revolutionised the club. He’s turned players into world-class players. Since he has been here, we have seen football from another planet.” – David Dein.
There’s no doubt what a great coach he has been and he doesn’t seem to be looking to stop anytime soon. Despite not winning anything for the past 7 years, I would offer him a new contract all day long, because at the moment, there’s no-one that is a better manager anywhere in the world!
