Former Spurs boss says Theo is the one to replace van Persie by AM
Harry Redknapp has said that Theo Walcott should settle his differences with the club and sign a news contract. He believes that Walcott has it in him become a ‘big fish’ at Arsenal. Here is what the former Tottenham boss said – “I gave Theo his debut as a kid at Southampton. I’ve watched him develop at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger but there is so much more to come from him.”
He also advised Theo “to sort out the little differences in his contract with the club and then sign it.”
Redknapp said: “Agreeing to stay put at Arsenal for the time being could turn out to be the best decision he will make for a long time. He can become a big, big fish at Arsenal. There are so many opportunities open to him now, especially with the departure of Robin van Persie. Rather than lament the sale of the captain as another nail in Arsenal’s coffin, Theo should seize the chance to replace him.”.
“Central defenders simply cannot handle his pace, his quick turns and lightning reactions, the way full-backs are perhaps better equipped to do so. He is scary when he runs straight down a centre-half’s throat. Of course he can perform out wide too.”
“I am not telling you anything Arsene doesn’t know about the varied range of talents Theo possesses. But even though Arsenal have brought in hotshots Lukas Podolski and Oliver Giroud, Theo could still be a great candidate to replace RVP.”
Redknapp specially stressed on a game played against Leeds, where Theo started as a center forward for Southampton. Theo played really well in that game and caused the central defenders all sort of problem. Theo himself has stated earlier that he would prefer to start from the middle instead of out wide. Wenger has already converted someone by the name of Theirry Henry from a winger to a center forward and we all know what happened next. But it seems Wenger doesn’t have the same belief in Walcott has he had in Henry to perform as a striker upfront.
With only Giroud and Chamakh available as natural striker upfront (Podolski is naturally a wide forward), Walcott might get his chance if Giroud continues to fire blanks or the French international faces a injury. We might just see Walcott in a new role this season, but before that he perhaps needs to resolve the contract situation at the club.
