It is depressing but Arsenal are no longer a “big club”

Why can’t we just accept the truth? by Vinay

Hi All,

Has the disappointment settled in? Has the anger subsided? Has the ranting ended or are we still keeping some things in store waiting for upcoming results? Yes its pretty obvious to make out an Arsenal fan in a crowd, see anyone sulking and you have your man alright. How things have changed in the span of a few days.

I will be the first to admit i am hopping mad. It is not because we didn’t buy the so called “top top player” but more so because of the obvious frailties which weren’t covered. We cannot go to a season with just one actual striker, because apart from Giroud, Lukas is more a second striker (even considering his exploits at Cologne) and Chamakh – well forget him please as of now.

We definitely needed a holding midfielder and Diaby is not the answer and never will be. So i was really disappointed that the boss didn’t do the obvious and insisted that this team is enough, boss we just have a first team and thats it, god forbid an injury to anyone and we are doomed. I never want us to go bonkers like City or Chelsea but we could have done with just a couple of additions and no we didn’t need a top top player, we just needed a decent striker and a holding midfielder. You know why all of us are so sad, this was actually a great transfer season, we got 3 terrific players and if we had supplemented them with a couple more, we would have been singing, err… competing.

Wait wasnt all this on cards??? What were we expecting actually in the first place? A marquee signing? A dream player? All of us know it will not happen, it never can happen in today’s world. Name a player worth his salt and there will be at least 5 teams interested and out of the 5, 3 will have ridiculous amounts of money to spend. Arsenal may have a lot of money and may be willing to spend as well but can we go ahead and spend ridiculous amounts of money on a player and then hope and pray it comes off? Arsenal FC never ever did something like that and to a good measure shouldn’t do it as well. Man City end up paying about 16 million for Javi Garcia and he probably ends up playing what- 30 games a season? Jack Rodwell will now be wondering what will happen to me? As i told earlier we need to buy – but buy a player who will play a lot and to get such a player would mean making someone in the team sit out consistently, they may not be brilliant but they are our players and we need to believe in them (patience is running thin though).

I should probably assume and speak on behalf of a lot of fans when i say this – its just not acceptable. Its not acceptable that Arsenal is no longer the “big” club. The ones who have seen the club through the years will find it tough to accept that there can be anything bigger than our beloved club. Wenger in a way made this club even bigger by ensuring throughout the early part of his management that AFC were the only real alternative to Man United and for any great player wanting to come to the UK, AFC and United were the only options. Now things have changed, players dont think of history or opportunities, they think of “careers”,

Agents (apart from squeezing as much money as possible from the clubs) also keep reminding their “products’ what is the most lucrative place to be than say to them where is the place they can progress. The honest fact is we no longer are an attractive proposition to any of the so called “top top player”. Its tough being an AFC fan when you hear that we are probably the best scouts for other teams. Its the admission and probably the failure of the board in a way not to have differentiated business and the football club. Arsenal football club is because of its team and not because of its board, there will be no board or members without a team, for a person like me who grew up on Arsenal from a little kid throughout my growing up years and till now after close to 20 years, it hurts to see that the “by far the greatest club in the world” sadly remains a distinct dream.

Its all nice to back your team to the hilt and “Arsenal till i die” is not just a fashion statement but the club needs to understand that end of the day the fans are normal people who dont understand economics, for them its their club and they have to compete and win, for the fans like me its my club; my life; my pride, i take pride saying i am gooner but i dont want anyone to ask me mockingly why. ….

Till next time
Regards
Vinay
