Jack Wilshere Back In Action Again?

Arsenal’s young midfielder Jack Wilshere, who missed the entire season of 2011-2012, is now ready to step up his rehabilitation procedure and try to get back in action before the new league season starts in August.

Young Gunner Racing To Be Fit For Season Opener

The English international has had a tough year as he saw Arsenal’s entire league campaign from the stands. He suffered an ankle injury during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly match against MLS outfit New York Red Bulls. Though he was initially thought to just be out for a few weeks, it was worse than previously imagined and the 20-year old underwent a surgery which ruled him out till the New Year. On his road to recovery in January, he suffered pain on his same ankle during training and had to be withdrawn immediately. Scans showed that the playmaker would require yet another surgery. This dashed the youngster’s hopes of representing England in the recently concluded Euro 2012 and also for making it into Great Britian’s Olympics squad. Wilshere has been training in the gym all this while, and is reportedly ready to take it up a notch and try and make it to Arsenal’s squad for the season opener against Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. Will we see this exciting midfielder in Arsenal’s starting 11 on August 18th?

Shock Arsenal Transfer News – Wilshere “I would Like To Move”

You would have thought that losing two midfielders in the space of a few days was bad enough news for Arsenal, but there was shock news late last night that a third in Jack Wilshere asked for a move.
Calm down it’s OK there is no need to throw everything at your computer screen. Wilshere wants a move yes, but it is not what you are thinking. He tweeted late last night on his twitter page, “On the last day of the transfer window I have decided that I would like to move..from the physio room back on the Emirates pitch please.”
After all the stresses and strains of the past few days it is good to see that Jack Wilshere can see the funny side of being injured. Personally I’m just glad the transfer window is now firmly shut, maybe the club can now get down to business on the pitch and start earning some much needed points.
If you are a fan of the transfer window fear not, it all starts again in 121 days………….

Jack Wilshere 'targeted by Manchester City' in £40m raid on Arsenal | Metro.co.uk

Jack Wilshere 'targeted by Manchester City' in £40m raid on Arsenal : "The 19-year-old has been one of the stars of the season, with his consistent performances for the Gunners earning him a place in the England team.

Jack Wilshere is a Manchester City transfer target (PA)
According to the News of the World, Wilshere's displays have convinced Manchester City they should spend big to land the youngster, despite his relative lack of experience.
The super-rich Eastlands outfit are said to be ready to pay £40 million for the midfielder and to double his wages to £110,000 a week.
Arsenal are reluctant to even consider selling their most promising young player, but will be put in an awkward position if City refuse to take no for an answer.
City have the resources to raise their bid to match any price tag attached to Wilshere, meaning Arsenal may have to spend the summer fending off a succession of offers - a situation they could also face with Cesc Fabregas, if Barcelona renew their pursuit of the Gunners captain.
News of City's interest in Wilshere comes amid reports that Arsene Wenger is planning a summer clearout at The Emirates.
The Arsenal boss is said to be prepared to sell Andrey Arshavin, Nicklas Bendtner Emmanuel Eboue, Tomas Rosicky, Denilson and Abou Diaby to raise funds for new signings."

Arsenal FC: Jack Wilshere Deserves 2011 PFA Young Player of the Year Award

Arsenal's Jack Wilshere has been short-listed for this year's PFA Young Player of the Year award along with his teammate Samir Nasri, Manchester City's Joe Hart, Tottenham's Gareth Bale, Manchester United's Luis Nani and Everton's Seamus Coleman.
Nani for some reason was overlooked for the senior award and isn't the front-runner for the junior accolade either. Nani must consider himself unlucky as his best season in the English Premier League didn't get the recognition that it deserved. Nani's omission from the Player of the Year shortlist maybe surprising, but even more surprising is the inclusion of Coleman in the junior category ahead of the likes of Javier Hernandez and Andy Carroll.
Carroll might have had an injury-plagued season, but his £35 million transfer to Liverpool highlights how well he has played for Newcastle United when fit. And Hernandez in his debut season in the Premiership has even surpassed the expectations of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The young Mexican was expected to play a bit-part role while adjusting to a new league; however, his cameo appearances were enough to dislodge Dimitar Berbatov, who is the leading goal scorer in the Premiership, from the starting 11.
That doesn't mean Coleman doesn't deserve to be on that list. He has been excellent for Everton this season; in fact, the consistent performer for Everton in a mostly inconsistent season. His pace, versatility and immaculate crossing on the right flank aided in Everton's resurrection after a dismal start to the 2010/11 campaign.

That said, the real competition for the Young Player award is between Wilshere and Bale. Bale shot to prominence with his blistering run and mesmerising hat trick against Internazionale Milan at the San Siro. Although he set the European stage on fire with his blazing performances, Bale couldn't emulate the same in the domestic league. Moreover, injuries also restricted him in the second half of the season. This is where his rival has the advantage.
Wilshere was never expected to play half the number of games he has already played this season. He may only be 19, but his pugnacious spirit showed throughout. At the beginning of the season, he was only 18 and everyone expected the diminutive midfielder to go out on loan to Bolton to complete his education.
However, Wilshere's determination and work rate during preseason encouraged Arsene Wenger to confer his Arsenal debut against Liverpool. Since then he has been a regular on the Arsenal team—probably the only Arsenal player who has disappointed the Arsenal medical staff and surpassed their expectations.
Wilshere provided the stability that Arsenal midfield craved for and outperformed the far-famed Cesc Fabregas. Even Fabio Capello couldn't stop glorifying Wilshere in public, which underlines the impact he has had this season.
Nailing down a regular starting place for England and Arsenal is a tough task in itself and even more challenging at 19. That's exactly what Wilshere has done, and he's already heralded as the future England captain, which is no surprise given the talent possessed by this rising star.

He's the technically gifted, ball-playing midfielder who England badly needed to compete with the likes of Spain, Brazil and Germany in the future. For all the talent he possesses, Wilshere is intelligent and mature beyond his age.
God bestowed him with the first touch that other players of his age dream of attaining at 23 or 24. He's also calm in possession. His amazing passing range just indicates what's there to come from him in the future.
The precocious midfielder is also an exceptional dribbler. His tackling prowess and strength also qualify him for the defensive midfield slot. He's too talented to play that role but still capable if need be.
One negative side to his game, which he can improve on as he matures, is his ineffectiveness in front of the goal. He must work on his finishing to add the cutting edge. Regardless of his shortcomings, Wilshere has certainly done enough to secure the prestigious honour this season. With 24 league starts so far and seven outings in the Champions League, including his standout show against Barcelona, Wilshere's durability and consistency make him priceless.
Come April 17, expect the coronation of the most exciting youngster in English football with the laurel that he greatly deserves for his excellent, mature, creative and solid displays.

Thoughts On The Tactics And Starting Eleven Against West Brom

There have only been a handful of games this season which I thought were going to be easy. The home game against WBA was one of those. Such experience can make one respect a sentence like – there are no easy games in the Premiership – instead of ignoring it as a cliché. So Arsenal travel to the Hawthorns in what is another potential banana skin against a side battling relegation.

I haven’t seen West Brom play after the change of manager so I’m not sure if there have been any major changes to their tactical approach. Going by Hodgson’s style at previous clubs I expect to see a well organized defence with persistent pressing by five men in the middle in a manner similar to Sunderland. It will not be easy for Arsenal to bring the ball out from the defence in the absence of Song and Diaby so Wilshere will have to play in a deeper role and take more responsibility in terms of holding off the pressure to link the defence with the offence. His excellent experience against Barca will be handy.

Arsenal will also need to move the ball as a fast tempo to break the rhythm of this pressing and to create openings. That means the players will have to play with a high level of confidence and energy. After a week’s break there should be no room for excuses like ‘we lacked sharpness’.

The other major tactical points worth noting are in defence. The West Brom attackers use the spaces between the midfield and defence, and between the defenders themselves fairly well. The two centre-backs will have to track their movement without fail and should not allow the likes of Odemwinge, Brunt, and Morrison to get in the gaps unmarked. They also have players in the middle who can play some defence splitting passes. That means the midfield and forward players will have to do a good job of closing down the man on the ball.

Even the full-backs will have to do better with their positioning because the West Brom wingers are definitely better than the likes of Fabio and Rafael playing on the wings. Sagna and Gibbs were quite poor against United. Hopefully it was a one-off blip for Sagna and with Clichy back both flanks should be better protected.

The big question for Arsene will be the attacking midfield role. He could pick Nasri, Rosicky, or Ramsey for that role. If Rambo is fully fit he’d be my choice but I’m not convinced about his sharpness.

These days Arsene starts Rosicky in the middle and Nasri on the flank but in this game I’d swap the two. The main reason for that is to have Nasri on the ball more frequently.

The reason for picking Rosicky on the right ahead of Bendtner or Eboue, the only other options, is that he can play the tippy-tappy game. If the Dane is picked in that role Arsenal will struggle to deal with West Brom’s pressing and will not be able to bring the ball out to the attacking areas that often.

I’d also instruct Wilshere and Denilson to play much deeper than usual and not stray too far in front of the defence. Arshavin will leave the left exposed so having only one deep-lying midfielder will leave too many vacant spaces for the defenders to cover.

With so many second string players in the starting line-up the tactical focus has to be on a patient and cautious approach. I don’t expect Arsenal to pile on the goals in this fixture but a grinding win with a couple of telling moments created by Arshavin, Nasri, or RvP should suffice.

Probable starting line-up,

Almunia – Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy – Denilson, Nasri, Wilshere – Rosicky, RvP, Arshavin.

I know the likes of Denilson and Rosicky are not popular figures but at the moment this seems to be the best possible line-up. If things are tight, Ramsey could be introduced at half time or the hour mark.

I expect this game to be settled with a one goal margin. If the tactics are right and there aren’t any glaring individual mistakes it should be at the right end.

Should Wilshere win the PFA Young Player of the Year award?

The PFA Player of the Year award seems to be a bit up in the air at the moment in terms of who will win, but it is surely just a two horse race between the young talent at Arsenal and at Spurs, with Jack Wilshere and Gareth Bale looking likely to fight it out to win the coveted trophy.

Although Bale is the current favourite, it is perhaps an unfair status since his best displays have come in the Champions League this season, with the Welshman shining amid some of the best players in world football and on some of the biggest stages European football has to offer. Compare this to the precocious talent of young Wilshere, who has had a far more consistent and impressive season for the Gunners in the Premier League, with his level of mature consistency and subtle contributions to Arsenal's title ambitions surely more impressive than the efforts of Bale, who has for all his undoubted ability spent a fair chunk of the season watching from the sidelines injured, while transfer rumours about his future circulated.

Despite this, football in England very rarely seems to reward players who put in hugely impressive displays but aren't necessarily the source of those eye-catching moments that make the highlight reels on Match of the Day and the football betting tips indicate Bale will still bag the award.

With this in mind, it might be fair to suggest that while Wilshere might be the right man for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, the chances are that unless he can fire a stunning strike in against a top side, he doesn't really stand much of a chance of ending up winning an award that his fantastic performances for Arsenal this season deserve. With Bale likely to win in the short term, it is up to Wilshere to show that he can be the winner in the long term.

United eye hat-trick of Cup defeats for Arsenal

ONDON: Two weeks ago Arsenal were dreaming of a quadruple but by Saturday evening after theirFA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United at Old Trafford they could be reduced to chasing just the Premier League title.

Arsenal were surprisingly beaten in the League Cup final by Birmingham City, knocked out of theChampions League by Barcelona and missed a chance to close on United in the Premier League when they drew 0-0 at home with Sunderland.

Manager Arsene Wenger, bristling with fury at the red card for Robin van Persie that he felt contributed to their 3-1 loss in the Nou Camp, must refocus his energy as he seeks his first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005.

With United also standing in the way of the Premier League title and the two teams due to meet in the Emirates next month, Saturday's game is a chance to gain a psychological advantage.

Arsenal have not won at Old Trafford since 2006, losing there in the league, Champions League and FA Cup, a 4-0 thrashing in 2008.

They are likely to be without Cesc Fabregas after the captain aggravated a hamstring strain against Barcelona and will definitely miss first-choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after he dislocated a finger.

With Theo Walcott also likely to miss out and Andrey Arshavin struggling for form, it looks a tough task for Arsenal, also beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford in December.

"We've we got to pick ourselves up, we have to go there on Saturday and get a win," midfielder Jack Wilshere said. "We are still in two competitions and we want a trophy."
