The list of midfield targets seems to be getting dangerously small. Maybe Arsene Wenger is perfectly clear in his own mind about who he wants to join the Arsenal squad. I would like to see some positive action, however, before the options all evaporate.
Reports in the media today suggest that two of the midfielders linked with a move to the Emirates will not be Gunners next season. Alan Dzagoev will be staying at CSKA Moscow for at least one more season, while Tongo Doumbia is expected to sign for West Brom soon.
22-year old Russian international Dzagoev was one of the stars of Euro 2012. He finished as joint top scorer despite Russia being eliminated in the group stages. As an attacking midfielder, he is not the sort of player that Wenger is most in need of but he appears to be on his way to greatness. With two years left on his contract, CSKA want another season out of him before they have no choice but to lose him to a bigger club.
22-year old Malian international Tongo Doumbia is a more defensive midfielder and has been linked with a number of clubs around Europe. The Rennes player has only appeared in 47 league games for the French club, but feels that he is ready for a step up. Arsenal have been looking at the promising youngster but have been beaten to the punch by West Brom, according to Talksport.
So, who are we going to add to our midfield?
