Well it has finally been confirmed by no less than the Arsenal chief scout in France Gilles Grimandi that the Gunners knew full well that Robin Van Persie wasn’t going to sign a new contract, and made their move for Olivier Giroud to replace him before it became common knowledge.
Grimandi also made it clear that they still hoped to retain Van Persie for the final year of his contract, but would obviously sell (obviously!) if a lucrative offer came in. He said yesterday: “We want him to stay with but there is only one year left on his contract so it’s complicated. The atmosphere is good at Arsenal, he has been with us for eight years and has a real bond with the club,”
“Was Olivier Giroud signed to compensate for his departure? Yes, we work to avoid finding ourselves in a corner. But we are doing everything we can to keep him and we want him to stay with us.
“However, if there is an exceptional offer and he wants to leave, keeping him will be tough. I would never have thought, for example, that Thiago Silva could be transferable but he was for a while. There are variables that can’t be controlled.”
Apart from the obvious fact that Arsenal fans were deliberately kept in the dark, it would also seem clear that IF Van Persie was soold for a tidy sum, he would not be replaced because that is why Giroud has been brought in…….
