Arsenal show defensive weakness again

Arsenal 2 – 2 Hong Kong Kitchee FC by KJ

Today it was an early morning kick-off for the final match of Arsenal’s Asia tour. This was definitely a more relaxed match than the one against Man City and this was reflected in the starting line-up:

Szczesny
Eastmond Djourou Miquel Gibbs
Coquelin Diaby
Chamberlain
Walcott Chamakh Miyaichi

Kitchee FC started brighter than us, as seems to be the case with most games nowadays, and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Miquel misplaced a pass to Diaby and instead the ball was immediately fed behind the young Spaniard to Yago who dinked it over Szczesny.

It’s becoming a theme that Arsenal just “gives away” goals. It is never down to attacking brilliance on the opponents half but down to basic errors on our behalf.

It wasn’t too long until we were level with some good work off the ball by Diaby. He hassled their defenders on the edge of the box and won the ball effortlessly. He then fed Walcott and he coolly slotted it past their goalkeeper to even the score.
Minutes later we were behind once again thanks to our shabby defending. A rebounded shot by Cheng Siu Waii was met by a crushing shot from Dani Cancela.

The second half began with Wenger making a few changes. He introduced Aneke, Jenkinson, Afobe, Gervinho, Yennaris, Bartley, Santos, Song, Eisfeld and Arteta. The complexion of the game changed immediately and we looked a lot brighter. Afobe almost levelled the game for us with a nice shot that ricocheted of the post.

Eventually as the game progressed we imposed ourselves, and Gervinho was playing like he was Messi. He was effortlessly gliding past their defence. He managed to get to the by-line where he cut it back to our newly found German Thomas Eisfeld. He tapped it in to equalise for us in the final 10 minutes.

It was a decent game that was really bossed by our younger generation. I was thoroughly impressed with Gervinho, and was also glad that Diaby managed to go through 45 minutes unscathed. All in all, it was a successful tour.
