It is all becoming a bit confusing , with Arsene Wenger saying there have been no fresh bids, Alex Ferguson admitting a bid, and Roberto Mancinisaying that Robin van Persie is “an Arsenal Player.”
Today’s stories will probably just confuse us further, but there might be some truth in them so here goes.
The Mirror and the Daily Mail both have reports on the potential transfer of van Persie to Man City and Man United respectively, but both stories have a common thread, MONEY. The story in the Daily Mail suggests that our Dutch striker would prefer a move to United over City, assuming that Juventus have backed out of the race. This may be true, with City already overloaded with Prima Donna front men.
Apparently, van Persie is insisting on getting the same wages as the top paid player at the club. Rooney is that man, on around £200,000 per week. He got that salary by threatening to leave, sound familiar anyone? The question is, whether United would be willing to pay van Persie the same as Rooney, and would it cause problems in the dressing room.
The Mirror story is similar in that it also claims that van Persie is demanding to equal the top earner at the club, Yaya Toure. The weekly wages involved are similar at both clubs, but it makes you think, if there is any truth to it, whether van Persie’s statements about Arsenal’s ambition tell us the real truth.
If van Persie is desperate to win some silverware, and he believes that City or United can offer it, would he be so picky about his wages. Both teams would be willing to at least match the deal that Arsenal have offered, so he would not be poverty stricken. Is the captain simply doing what Rooney did and trying to get himself the best deal possible from Arsenal?
