The Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong made his decision to play for Ghana instead of England some time ago, but his international debut has been delayed due to his few injury problems, but also because Ghana need to get clearance from the British football authorities proving that he hasn’t made himself ineligible in any way.
The Director of Communications of the Ghana Football Association, Mr Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has made it clear that it is now only a matter of time before he gets to play his first game for the Black Stars, despite playing for England at U16 and U17 levels, and his first call-up could be for the African Cup of Nations in January.
Daara said: “We wrote to FIFA to ascertain the true status of the player to be sure if he could feature for Ghana. Interestingly, FIFA directed the GFA to the federations of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland to know whether he ever featured for them”.
“Hopefully, we would get past this development and get him to play for Ghana pretty shortly.”
It seems that England and Scotland have supplied the requested documents and as soon as N. Ireland and Wales follow suit, Frimpong will get his chance to play for the country of his birth. I guess this means that both Alex Song and Frimpong will be missing during the crucial January period. And don’t forget Gervinho……
