Can RVP still play for Arsenal? by KJ
The main news today is that Van Persie may yet still play for the Gunners next season after Sky Sports reported that the motive to his statement was money.
I find it quite revolting if true that this whole stunt was for Van Persie to get some more money. We apparently offered £130k a week as well as a £5 million signing on fee. I don’t know how much more he wants. That is the top of any wage ceiling we have. Arsenal simply can’t afford to pay him anymore.
They paid him a nice hefty wage every week he was injured. No other team would’ve stuck by him especially when he was earning £90k a week. But Wenger obviously showed a lot of faith and loyalty to the Dutchman.
However, from a purely footballing point of view, this would be welcomed news. We need to show intent and willingness to keep our best players and hence making sure we keep RVP should be top of our priorities.
I’m a strong believe that any successful club needs at least one world class player to carry the team when all hopes looked lost. After Van Persie, who do we have? No one. Wilshere is the only player that has world class potential at the moment and even then, he may not be the same player he was before his untimely injury. We simply need to have a world class player in the ranks if we want to return to greatness.
Although I welcome the possibility of RVP signing a new deal, he has lost any respect I had for him. He will never become a legend as a result. It’s an insult to consider him in the same class as Bergkamp or Adams. He was worshipped at Arsenal and he had everything at his feet and yet that’s all been lost regardless of the contract situation.
