Afellay to Arsenal?
News reports today suggest that Ibrahim Afellay could be on his way to the Emirates. The new Barcelona coach, Tito Villanova was firstly adamant that he would keep the Dutch international at the Nou Camp. However, Barcelona have been priced out of a move for Javi Martinez and hence are now looking to increase their budget. As a result, Afellay is now available for sale.
He’s already apparently rejected a move to Ligue 1 side, Lille. He is looking for a much bigger club to come in for him with Arsenal and Inter Milan his main priorities.
Afellay has been a player on everyone’s lips this summer. He was looking great in the International friendlies where he so effortlessly combined with Van Persie. However, he did have a lacklustre Euros. I personally wouldn’t look into it too much as every single member of the Dutch squad (aside from Sneijder) looked absolutely appalling.
He is a quality player that is extremely versatile. He can play anywhere on the wings as well as being able to play as an attacking midfielder. He is a very quick player. He also has extremely tight dribbling. If I was going to make a comparison, I’d say he is a faster version of Nasri. Obviously it’s a bit of cringe-worthy comparison but bear with me. Afellay is very effective from the wings. He likes to cut in and combine with the strikers.
My worry is that if we are expressing interest in the Dutchman, we may be looking to shift Theo Walcott. This is not great news as I still feel the Englishman has a lot to offer. However, if we can shift Theo for about £20m and spend £8m on Afellay, that would leave us £12m to play with. That’s convinently the amount it would cost us to get M’Vila.
How does M’Vila and Afellay for Theo sound? I think the question answers itself.
