Arsenal could loan rather than buy Afellay

Posted on August 27, 2012 by Bob

The Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay was not even part of the squad selected by Tito Vilanova for Barcelona’s La Liga game yesterday. The 26-year old midfielder must be aware that if he does not find a new club before midnight on Friday, then he will not be playing much football before January at the earliest.

Barcelona were hoping to sell the player who never really got a chance with the Spanish side after picking up an injury early on last season. A lengthy lay off meant that by the time he returned, young players such as Pedro and Tello had progressed through the youth system and were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Afellay had apparently agreed on a potential transfer to Arsenal, but the move never went through. Arsene Wenger could now snap up a potentially great midfielder/winger for nothing as Barcelona are not trying to get anything out of the deal, unlike Jose Mourinho. Obviously, Arsenal would want some kind of option to buy, as Arsenal would not want to bring him back to his best only to lose him.

Afellay’s agent has spoken about the player’s need for playing time in what amounts to a come and get me plea. The Dutchman does not want to play for just anyone and I think that Arsenal would have little problem in getting him if they wanted to. Is he Special enough for Wenger?
