Arsenal desperately need more firepower

Time to live up to the Gunner name by TS

So its no surprise this morning when you flick through the newspapers or watch the media, that everyone is talking about Arsenal’s draw with Stoke. As usual, some players did well, others had a bad game. We all know who was who and this article isn’t about pointing those players out. Rather, I want to discuss what our draws actually mean and one solution to the problem.

So when you hear draw, you often conjure up a image of two equal teams canceling each other out. That’s the nature of the result. Against Sunderland, one could present the argument that Sunderland parked the bus and just defended well but that still doesn’t excuse us from scoring- not against them and not against Stoke- who also defended well. But come one, its no secret that these types of teams go into the game with defense on their mind. If every- middle- of- the-table team walks away with one point from us they’ll generally be happy. The same can’t be said about us. You don’t win this league because you didn’t concede any goals. You win it by scoring too.

You look at the likes of any big club and you automatically expect goals regardless of their opposition. Why? Because they have the firepower up front. I’m not saying Giroud doesn’t have what it takes. I’m saying we can’t wait 5 or 6 games into the season until he starts settling down. AW needs a striker. Simple as that. Its been said hundreds of times.

We need someone who is hungry in front of goal. A natural goal scorer. Give Giroud the chance, sure, but if he struggles bring on at least his equal. I mean, look at Torres, a better striker than Giroud and he took a whole season to settle down at Chelsea. Same goes for Andy Carroll. We can’t afford to do that, at least not without a Drogba as backup. And let’s face it, right now we got nothing close to that. I only right this article because our search for a striker has gone cold. Either AW is keeping his cards close to his chest on who he wants or worse, he’s focusing on a DM.

The harsh facts are that we can have the best defense in the league but if we not causing problems up front and taking chances then we’ll never compete for the title. Liverpool are next and by then let’s hope we give some playing time to a new striker because they’re going to be our first measure of how successful our team set up really is.
