I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but there is a good chance that Barcelona will try to sign another of Arsenal’s best midfielders this summer. Alex Song is on the radar of the Catalan club after they have all but abandoned their pursuit of Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao.
Arsene Wenger will surely do everything in his power to stave off any approaches for one of our best midfielders, one he has nurtured since Song arrived at the club as a 17-year old prospect. Now the 24-year old Cameroon international has made himself an indispensable part of the Gunners team.
Song saved Arsenal’s season last year after being asked to play in a more advanced and attacking role after the departure of Nasri and Fabregas, but should return to his more natural position this season. It is this position that Barcelona need to fill, as Seydou Keita took advantage of a clause in his contract to move on a free transfer to China for massive wages.
Bilbao are refusing to negotiate on Martinez’ 40 million euro release clause and so Barcelona are looking elsewhere. Song has two years left on his contract and is happy at Arsenal, so hopefully he will not put any pressure on Wenger to allow him to leave. We are supposed to be strengthening the defensive midfield area and to lose our best player in that position would be nothing short of a catastrophe.
This should be a wake up call to the Arsenal board to get a good new contract drawn up for Song as soon as possible. We cannot afford to be in nanother van Persie situation next summer.
