Why this summer won’t be as bad as it seems by AH
When Van Persie came out and announced that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract, fans cried out like it was the end of the world. I admit I too, doubted the clubs ability that day, however I quickly came to realise that we can move on and although both Podolski and Giroud are untested in the Premier League, their performances for their last clubs, last season, show that we have bought to quality strikers to help lead our attack.
I saw some comments like; “We are going to get relegated”
“We will never win another trophy now”
And… “Next year I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vermaelen leave”
Now that’s just unbelievable and I cannot believe that people actually think that. We continued after Henry, Vieira, Fabregas and we will continue after Van Persie. It may seem like our team will worsen this summer should Van Persie leave, however if you take into account, transfers overall, it’s not as bad as it seems.
So with some unwanted players already gone, this has freed up some squad places for new players and it’s also freed up some wages.
If we sell all of our dead wood for their market values we can expect to generate around £20 million in transfer fees, whilst freeing up around a massive amount in wages each week, not including those already sold. Plus the potential departure of Van Persie for about £20 million, gives us £40 million to add onto our £30 million budget left after the purchases of Podolski and Giroud.
Now don’t get too excited and think that we will spend another £70 million because that won’t happen but I expect us to spend around half of it.
Wenger wants Spain International Santi Cazorla for £18 million, Rennes defensive midfielder Yann M’Vila for £14 million, plus not forgetting the rumours that Real Madrid’s Nuri Sahin could join on-loan. So those signings cost around £32 million, leaving the odd bit of money to spend on a backup goalkeeper should both Mannone and Fabianski leave and a defender. Meaning we spend around £40 million more this window. Not bad and those signings being added onto the team we already had sounds promising, however although we spend money on attacking players, it’s vital that we strengthen the defensive side of the game too.
