If Arsenal fans were beginning to worry about the gap left in the Gunner’s midfield by the sale of Alex Song to Barcelona, then Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ready to put their minds at ease. The Turkish international Nuri Sahin from Real Madrid was rumoured to be on the verge of signing a year long loan deal with Arsenal, but is now going to Liverpool so unless Arsene Wenger makes a nother move in to the transfer market before the end of the week, Song’s role will have to be filled from the existing squad.
The Ox is definitely not short of talent or confidence, but would have to adapt to a slightly unfamiliar role in the centre of midfield. The youngster has spoken of his readiness to step into the shoes of Song in an interview with The Sun.
“When you’re playing on the pitch you have to step up to the plate and perform.
“I’m definitely confident of that and I’m definitely confident of filling Alex’s role.”
The England international has always been viewed by Wenger as a potential central midfielder, despite being used primarily on the wing last season. The player’s father told Wenger when he signed from Southampton that his ideal role was similar to that of Steven Gerrard’s at Liverpool.Alex would love to replicate the position of the Anfield skipper.
“I’ve been watching him since I was a young lad.
So that’s a side of my game I want to add to, scoring more goals.”
The Ox is also certain that Arsenal will surprise their critics and challenge for the major honours this season. The Gunners, he claims, are a tight knit and confident bunch and they will not miss van Persie and Song half as much as some people think.
