As an Arsenal fan who grew up a devoted New York Yankees and New York Giants football fan, a wise man once said that offense wins games but defense wins championships.
The Giants and Yankees have always had players with great individual achievements but they only began to win championships when they played as a team and focus on defense. later in life I became a devoted arsenal fan.
Yes, RVP has a spectacular season and Song did provide him with a number of wonderful eye catching assists to score memorable goals, but it took a unique set of circumstances for RVP to score as many goals as he did and for Song to create as many assists. Circumstances that will not exist this season going forward.
Before last season, thanks to Fabregas and Nasri leaving the club, with Wilshire and Diaby injured, Arteta new to the club and Ramsey playing his first full season after that horrendous leg break, Arsenal were decimated in midfield. Therefore Song, who isn’t a disciplined defender, saw an opportunity to abandon his role as DM and play more forward. Remember this fits Song’s personality, to garner attention. He dyes his hair to stand out on the pitch, he wears lots of bling to draw attention to himself.
Since playing defense is boring to him, he plays more forward which weakens our defense and makes it more porous. Therefore, all of the offensive benefits we gained from Song are clearly offset by his defensive liabilities as DM. If he leaves, he can easily be replaced by someone who understand his position as a DM and understands the concept of playing team defense. Emmanuel Frimpong has great potential to fill that role if he can stay healthy. Until then, I like Yann M’Villa to fill that role. I want a player who relishes playing defense and loves giving a good tackle like a scorer who loves scoring goals.
RVP scored all those goals simply because Arsenal had no other scoring options. Gervinho was a lousy finisher, Theo was maddeningly inconsistent and as mentioned earlier our midfield position was decimated with injuries. Fast forward to this summer, we have loads of more scoring options in Podolski, Giroud, Carzola and this summer a vastly improved Gervinho and Walcott. Furthermore, we have a healthy and revitalized Diaby and, soon to return, that boy sensation Wilshire. We have not even mentioned another boy sensation named Chamberlin and Ramsey is forgotten in all the talk this summer.
Now arsenal is loaded in the forward positions with young, lively players. Wait, I forgot to mention Arteta who now has one year under his belt with Arsenal and will only improve and assert himself more this season.
So, Arsenal as it stands now, once the DM position is clarified, have the potential and capacity to win any and all trophies this year and for some years to come. They just need to learn to play team defense and for players to play their positions well. Also we need players who appreciates playing for a big club like Arsenal and are thankful for being given the opportunity to compete for league and champion’s league trophies. I’m talking about players like Koscielny. His wonderful statement in the press yesterday proved why he is thankful for playing at Arsenal. Thank you Kosceilny
In Wenger we trust.
