Arsenal DID make a deadline day signing! Welcome Dejan Iliev!

Transfer Deadline Day Signing by AH

Arsenal did make one signing yesterday 17 year old Macedonian Goalkeeper DEJAN ILIEV.

Why Wenger why? Its deadline day and you’re signing some completely unknown teenager. Yes he may have loads of potential but then so does Wojiech Szczesny aged 22 and Damien Martinez aged 19. It’s not as if our goalkeepers are getting old and it’s a bit of an unnecessary transfer to make and especially on deadline day. The Arsenal fans expected you to be smiling at the cameras holding up a player’s shirt today, but with an experienced, well known player, not another teenager.

Oh well nothing we can do know, hopefully ILIEV has the same career path as Thomas Eisfeld who also joined on deadline day in January and he turned out to be another “the next big thing.” Welcome to Arsenal Dejan.

Adebayor & Hleb – Would you welcome back these two former Gunners?

There can be no disputing that signings are needed this summer, and there are two former Arsenal players likely to be available.

Firstly, Alexander Hleb has made it no secret that he regrets leaving the club and wants a return. Virtually unused since signing for Barcelona, the Belarussian playmaker has had loan spells at Stuttgart and Birmingham, both without much joy. He’s been quoted as saying:

‘I love Arsenal. It is always in my heart but now is too early to speak about a new club. Everything is possible but I am just saying if I get this chance, of course I’d come.’

Would we take him back though? We’re not exactly short of ‘creative’ players, by which I mean, technically gifted attackers who like to pass the ball, rather than get on the end of things and score goals. Hleb was notable for his lack of goals and end product, but he’s better than someone like Rosicky or Diaby, so if he were happy to be backup, he might be a decent cheap option? Then again, he won’t exactly be popular with the fans for jumping ship as soon as Barca came knocking. Overall, I don’t think he’d be worth it.

Another former Gunner who’ll be looking for a move is Emmanuel Adebayor, who finds himself in the unique situation of not being needed by Manchester City and out on loan at Real Madrid (how much sense would that have made three or four years ago?).

Let’s face it, he’s not that good, which is why he’s down the pecking order at City. He’s something of an emergency loan for Mourinho, who has been without first choice striker Gonzalo Higuain for much of the season, and is unlikely to be offered a permanent move.

While I don’t exactly rate him that highly, he’s probably better than Chamakh and Bendtner and would be worth thinking about if he were available for cheap.

Again though, the question is, could the fans forgive him for his behaviour when he wanted away? Not to mention his provocative celebrations in front of our fans when scoring against us for City.

So, in the end this article doesn’t seem so worthwhile. I guess it’s a sign of how desperate I am that I’m longing for Hleb and Adebayor – the last time we had both of them we had what looked like a title-winning team and they were standout performers. Still, no thanks.

Will Arsenal fans welcome the Stan Kroenke takeover?

Latest reports suggest that Arsenal football club have agreed to be taken over by Stan Kroenke, which would value the club at £731 million ($1.2 billion).

The American billionaire, who owns close to 30% of the clubs shares, is said to have offered Arsenal shareholders £11,750 per share after already securing 16.1 and 15.9% from Danny Fiszman and Nina Bracewell-Smith respectively. This means Kroenke now controls 62.89% of Arsenal. The American tycoon said:

‘Arsenal is a fantastic club with a special history and tradition and a wonderful manager in Arsene Wenger. We intend to build on this rich heritage and take the club to new success.’

Kroenke, who already owns major sports franchises in the United States, still has to make an offer for the remaining shares in the club which are held by Alisher Usmanov.

Arsene Wenger welcomed the takeover. The Frenchman said:

‘I have worked with Stan Kroenke at board meetings over the past couple of years and I believe he has the best interests of Arsenal at heart. He understands the club’s heritage and traditions and our ambition to run the club in a way which protects our long term future.’

This news should be music to Arsenal fans ears. At least now the club has one owner and can finally compete with the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City during the forthcoming transfer window. I believe our new owner is investing for the good of the club as Wenger himself has stated, unlike the Glazer family over at Manchester United.

It seems Wenger has been given the green light to stay on despite his failure to win a trophy for what may be 6 years after the conclusion of this season. However, I think the Arsenal boss will be forced to buy more players during the summer window in order to build a star-studded team. It’s still early, but I believe this takeover is a step in the right direction for the Gunners.
