Loan Watch – Benik Afobe at Bolton by AM

Benik Afobe, who was loaned out to Bolton at the start of this month, has said that Jack Wilshere and Ryo Miyaichi’s experience at Bolton helped him make his decision to switch with ease. In an interview Afobe said –

“I spoke to both Jack Wilshere and Ryo Miyaichi before I joined Bolton and they both told me how good a club it was and that the fans are great, so it made the decision very easy for me,” the 19-year-old told Sky Sports.

“Being out injured for over six months last season meant that I missed an awful lot of football, especially for a young player.

“I spoke to the boss at Arsenal and he told me that he couldn’t guarantee that I would be playing regularly, which is fair enough because there are quality players ahead of me there and I fully understand that.

“Hopefully I can stay injury-free, play 30-plus games and do well here.”

Afobe has made a great start to his career at Bolton. Although he made his debut in a 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly, Afobe more than made up for it in his next game. Bolton travelled to Prenton Park to meet Tranmere Rovers in their next pre-season friendly. The Arsenal Loanee scored a wonderful hat-trick in the space of 30 minutes to light up the occasion.

Afobe has come on as a substitute in all three of Bolton’s league games so far and will be getting used to the pace of the Championship. The powerful and pacy striker was always earmarked to be the next big thing from the famed Arsenal academy, but his injury last season did slow down his progress a bit.

Now it seems, Afobe is at the right club to develop further and maybe he will return next season to challenge for a spot in the first team. Bolton are a wonderful club for players to develop, with their present manager and wonderful fans as Jack Wilshere and Miyaichi would concur. Afobe would certainly comeback a more experienced and finished article.
