Arsenal to offer Oxlade-Chamberlain new contract by AM

It looks like Arsenal have finally learnt from their mistakes of waiting for the last year in a player’s contract to open negotiations over an extension. Arsene Wenger is reportedly set to offer his prized asset Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a new improved contract.

The Gunners in the past have lost players in the past like Flamini, Nasri and more recently Robin van Persie. In all the above cases, the players were already into their final year of the existing contract before Arsenal opted for contract extension talks. Flamini left for AC Milan, Nasri went to Manchester City and van Persie left for Manchester United. In all the above cases, Arsenal were unable to come to terms with the players regarding their extension. Some cited wage hike issue while others gave the ‘lack of ambition’ excuse for leaving the club. Letting the player move into the final year of his contract obviously allows the player to hold the club for ransom, which Theo Walcott tried recently (but failed). Walcott, even though he has agreed to extend his stay at the club, is yet to pen down a new contract.

Finally though, it seems like Arsene Wenger and the club has learnt its lesson. Reportedly Wenger will offer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a new contract with improved wages. The former Southampton youngster still has four years left in his present contract, but Wenger sees him an important part of Arsenal’s future and is not prepared to take any risk with ‘The Ox’.
