Any Arsenal fans worried about Spurs this season? Peter Hill-Wood isn’t!

Posted on September 05, 2012 by admin

Peter Hill-Wood rubs salt on Tottenham’s wound by AM

Arsenal chairman has come out and said that Spurs are unlikely to pose any threat to Arsenal this season. Hill-Wood said – ‘I do not see Spurs posing a problem for us this season.

‘Their new manager may be a great success but they have to find a stadium.

‘That’s going to be very difficult. Finding a site and financing it is a major problem which we know all about.

‘We have a pretty good chance of challenging for the Premiership. I don’t see why we cannot win it this year.’

The above interview basically interprets into ‘they will remain in our shadows’. Last season Arsenal made an incredible comeback in the league after lagging behind Spurs in early part of the season. Last season was perhaps Spurs’ best chance to topple Arsenal as they had assembled their best team for some time now, while Arsenal’s was perhaps the weakest under Arsene Wenger’s day. But in the end Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over West Brom meant that the Gunners, once again, finished above Spurs. It was the 17th time in a row now that Arsenal have finished ahead of Tottenham in the league. So with a new manager and their best player Luka Modric leaving for Real Madrid, it looks like the Gooners will celebrate St. Totteringham’s day once again.

I’m not sure that we can actually challenge for the title, but I’d have a bet on Andre Villas-Boas getting the sack before Christmas!

Arsenal legend urges Wenger to sign Spurs striker

Posted on August 28, 2012 by Bob

If anybody knows about how to score goals it is the one and only Ian Wright. Wrighty scored 185 goals for the Gunners, a club record only surpassed by King Henry. With 305 goals in his club career, the man was a goal scoring legend, and has turned his attention to the goal scoring problems of his former club, Arsenal.

Unlike some Arsenal fans, Wright is confident that Giroud and Podolski will soon adapt to the rigours of the Premier league and will start to score goals. He does share the fear of many Gooners that Arsenal will get left behind in the title race unless they start taking the chances and half chances as soon as possible.

Wright’s solution to the problem is an “audacious” bid for the Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. Wright told The Sun that,

“Defoe would be the perfect replacement for Robin van Persie, the penalty box predator to finish off all those half chances which are currently going begging.”

Wright believes that Defoe would welcome the move from Tottenham, where he does not seem to get the recognition he deserves. Despite scoring 119 goals for Spurs, he has often been left on the bench.

Wright’s other suggestion is for the capture of Yohan Cabaye from Newcastle. The midfielder has been linked with Arsenal, and Wright thinks he would fit in to Wenger’s team perfectly.

Nuri Sahin turns down Spurs as Arsenal talks continue

Posted on August 08, 2012 by admin

While Arsenal are continuing to haggle with Real Madrid over the terms of Nuri Sahin’s one year loan deal, there are conflicting reports about the possibility that either Tottenham or Liverpool could also be in with a chance of landing the Turkish international.

Both the Guardian and the Mail report that Sahin himself has turned down a move to White Hart Lane as a makeweight in Real Madrid’s negotiations over Luka Modric and that the Emirates is his preferred destination, but the Spanish paper Marca reports that Liverpool are now in the driving seat because of Brendan Rodger’s friendly relations with Jose Mourinho. There is also the fact that Sahin may be more likely to get regular playing time at Anfield than with Arsenal.

There are reports that say that Wenger wants to try and get the price for the loan period reduced (no surprise there!) but also wants the option to buy him next summer if Sahin fits into the team well, while Mourinho is adamant that he still has a future at Madrid.

But the Guardian is convinced that even if Wenger get an agreement with Madrid, it is simply so that he has a backup option if Alexander Song pushes him for a move to Barcelona or elsewhere, but I would have thought that Sahin is simply extra cover in midfield while Wenger waits to see if Jack Wilshere fully recovers from his ongoing problems.

They also reckon that Song has annoyed Wenger by asking him to let the midfielder at least consider offers from other clubs, which has led Wenger to explore other possibilities…

Only God (or Wenger!) knows whether any of these reports are true, but on the premise that there is no smoke without fire I would say that Arsenal are certainly discussing the possibility of Sahin coming to the Emirates!

Spurs preview - the last of the last chances

e dramatic nature of our draw on Sunday killed our title chances in the eyes of many, for two reasons – some felt United’s lead was now too great to overcome, others felt our ability to self-destruct would mean more dropped points before the end of the season. As I said after the game, I was close to writing us off – the only remaining hope was that United would drop points at Newcastle, therefore giving us the boost we needed to pick ourselves off the floor and beat Spurs.
Newcastle’s recent record at home to United (two 6-1 defeats) suggested it unlikely, but they did their bit last night, holding them to a goalless draw which gives us the opportunity to close the gap to four points. It would still take the perfect set of results (six wins for us, and United dropping points elsewhere), but the fat lady is still only doing her vocal warm ups. She is yet to be called to the stage.
Of course, we still have to win ourselves, and it has been in these crucial moments we have been found wanting – every time we’ve gotten close, we’ve come up with an inventive new way not to win a football match. But there are a million and one reasons to be driven on tonight. Here are just a few:
  • It is Spurs.
  • They embarrassed us at the Grove this season.
  • They won the last time we played there in the league, with that Danny Rose goal, which was something of a Neil Mellor moment in its freakishness.
  • If we didn’t win, it would be our greatest rivals hammering the final nail into our trophy hunt coffin.
  • If we do win, we are unlikely to have to put up with the ‘Spurs in the Champions League’ love-in next season.
  • A win speeds up St Totteringham’s Day.
  • Watching Redknapp Sr twitch on the touchline and Redknapp Jr squirm in the studio is always fun.
Even if United were twenty points clear, it would be a big game, but that it represents the last chance we have of lifting silverware this season makes it yet more vital. It should also be a great game – a draw suits neither side with their respective aims, and both are considerably better going forward than defending.
What I would like to see is more shooting. A novel concept, I know, but Gomes is a decent keeper, and he is more than capable of saving three or four good efforts. But he is also something of a clown, and will drop one out of fifteen routine shots into his own net. With Almunia missing, we have the advantage there. I’m not saying change the style of play entirely, I’m just saying if you get an opening within 20 yards, take it. Have a go. We are allowed to score deflected goals, rebounds and screamers, we don’t have to rely on tap-ins at the end of sweeping moves. I’d be delighted to see a scruffy goal, particularly if it were a Nasri effort deflecting off Gallas’ arse.
The team is likely to have a couple of changes from Sunday – Sagna is fit and ready to replace Eboue, while Wilshere, fresh from his Young Player of the Year award, may be rested as the long season finally catches up with him. He certainly looked weary against Liverpool, unsurprising given how much he puts into every game. Song can come in and free Cesc up.
I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Arshavin start ahead of Walcott, with Theo coming on later to test tiring legs, but otherwise the team should look similar to the weekend. Vermaelen aside, it is about as strong a outfit as we can currently field. Time to prove it.
Hope springs eternal. After tonight, we will either be right back in it or anxiously looking over our shoulders at Chelsea. This really is the last chance.
